for those that do not know of Star Trek, this is in no way shape or form disrespectful.

Covering “Stairway to Heaven” is basically rock and roll’s third rail. Mess it up, and fans never let you forget it. Dolly Parton walked into that request fully braced for Robert Plant to turn her down flat.

She reached out personally to ask for his blessing to cut her own version of the Led Zeppelin masterpiece. By all accounts, she went in nervous, expecting pushback, creative restrictions, or at minimum a lengthy back‑and‑forth. No one blames her — few songs in history are guarded more fiercely by fans and their creators alike.

Plant’s answer couldn’t have been shorter, or more definitive. “Of course you can, you’re Dolly Parton.” That was it. No fine print, no creative rules, no ego‑driven pushback. Just one legend giving another legend full room to work.

Dolly didn’t waste that trust. She never tried to mimic Plant’s delivery or copy Zeppelin’s slow‑burn sound. She wove in country twang, gospel warmth, and that unmistakable voice, and turned one of rock’s most untouchable tracks into something unmistakably hers.

There’s something perfect about that exchange. You don’t earn permission for a song like that with paperwork. You earn it with a lifetime of being the kind of artist even other legends don’t second‑guess. It makes you wonder which other all‑time greats could have walked away with that same yes.
