I've been watching Florida fishing game on YouTube and how they grab people with undersized fish in their boat or out of season species. Fines can get real expensive, so does anyone know a free fish identification app? I downloaded an app called Fish verify but they want 5.99 a month or the free version is very limited.
Thanks
(I use iOS on my iPhone).

Never seen an app for such a thing.

I'd contact Florida fish and Game to see what they have.
Problem your going to run into is that quite a few species of fish look almost identical with only small nuances to tell the difference between them. Real need to be be up on your fIchthyology if your not targeting specific species.

I'm surprised no one has heard of these types of apps. Here is the one I first downloaded but it's $5.99 a month. You scan the fish and it also gives you the species min and max length regulation or in or out of season! The wardens use different apps. This was one of them. But I'm looking for a free one.IMG_0431.jpeg

I'm in NY. I've been watching the Youtube channels that show the FL wardens busting fisherman for undersized fish, out of season fish etc. If you don't know what the fish is one catches how can you know the rules and regs of that fish? And they were recommending getting these types of apps. I just don't want to pay $6 a month for one especially with our short boating/fishing seasons up in the Northeast part of the U.S.

I just looked at the NY Regs, Man they have a book they call a pamphlet, every area has different Regs
https://dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/freshwater-fishing/regulations
Exactly. Was watching another vid last night. This one was a commercial striper fisherman who had 6 undersized fish (and not by much). Cost him a whopping $2800 in fines.
Another issue I've seen in NY waters is . . . I never keep them. I take a pic and let them go. My idea of eating say a Salmon for dinner is when the waiter brings it to me on a plate with a nice glass of Chardonnay 🤣. Some regs say you can't even bring a fish you are letting go into the boat just to take it's picture let alone catch a species that is out of season.
Also in a state like FL you have to measure lobsters under the water with a gauge. You can still be fined just for bringing a lobster into the boat if it is undersized.

I know someone out there uses a free fish scanning ID and reg app.

Thanks Mc Tool I know someone will come up with a free version. It's like the free Doppler radar apps . . . We have not been caught in the rain for like 8-10 years now. Used to be when we were on a huge lake like the 132 mile Lake Champlain where 1/2 is in NY and 1/2 in VT. Years ago you could not see a storm moving in when it was on the other side of a mountain. Now with the radar app I can see storms developing 2 hours away to our west. If it's a scattered storm I can out run it either north or south. But if a wide spread storm the radar app can give me two hours to get the boat back to the launch and onto the trailer.
I used always fear being caught on an aluminum boat ⚡⛈️.🙀

Thanks alldodge . . . when we used to buy a NYS fish license it came with a reg booklet. I'm 77 and the type is hard for me to see. I have a free app that scans a flower to tell me if it's a flower or a weed before I yank it out.
There will be more free fish scanning apps hitting the app store pretty soon, I'm sure. I also have a free wind app for boating. On my 15 foot aluminum winds over 10 mph (and usually gusting to 15-20 mph) does make for a fun day on the water 😢

Fish often look different in different waters, so get a guide that is as local as possible. e.g. Black Drum in the bay in the spring are quite silver and grey. Except for their distinctive drum shape, that could be mistaken for other kinds of fish.

Yes ,we have Snapper and they vary quite a bit in colour depending on habitat and the older ones develope a head bump .......They still look like the same fish. I guess its the same thing as trout and salmon getting that hooked lower jaw.
I think some rules like your not being allowed to boat a cray or fish to photograph is to stop arseholes claiming that any illegal fish on board was just being photographed and was about to be put back ( the fact that its obviously been dead for hours doesnt matter 🙄).
