I pulled my new to me Islander (one year) and in order to make it look nice again I decided to do a paint job. I just do not know exactly what type of paint and what shade of blue to use. Being color blind does not help. Also what type of white goes on the bottom when she is in a slip in fresh water the entire summer? Decals will be next on my list.Your input is highly appreciated,
Thank you.

I’m in the same boat you’re in (Pun intended??). Bought a 25 yo boat in good condition just needing some freshening up. From the research I’ve done most any good oil based paint should work above water. If the boat is not left in the water it could work also below water. But there are paints specifically for under water, which I will use for the bottom half of the boat. Haven’t decided which one as I won’t do anything till spring. More requirements if salt water. There are videos of guys using rattle-can paint getting good results. Prep is important. I’ve never painted a boat so get more information. The guy doing the Boats from Work thread I would think is knowledgeable in painting. The thread show some really nice work.

For decals I have looked at a few sites. I’m going with Custom Vinyl Lettering (https://customvinyllettering.net/). I liked their site a bit better and being in Indiana was a plus. They quoted my design, very similar to the original, and I was happy with the price. I’m not doing anything until spring and they actually told me to wait till then to order. They have the design saved. I’m changing the color scheme to black and gold from blue and gold because Purdue’s colors are soooo much better than Michigans, along with some other minor changes.

You will need a 2 part epoxy paint for under the waterline. You will likely want an epoxy barrier coat under the antifouling paint if you plan to use same, so find a paint that can do both if possible.

A 1 part polyurethane paint (or marine enamel) will work for topside.

Get someone you trust to pick the shade of blue paint, or go white.

Change the 6th word in my post from epoxy to polyurethane. You will need a 2 part paint on the boat bottom, but it does not need to be epoxy. A 2 part polyurethane like Perfection will work nicely

Do the bottom in the color of the water you will be in so it doesn't look dirty
That is a nice idea, except that Lake Ontario changes color all the time. It is very often clear as glass. Near the rivers it is brownish after rains and then there is the green water I am always looking for because that is nutrient rich and where the fish hang out.
If I follow your advice I would have to make the bottom in rainbow colors and then all my conservative friends will accuse me of being "woke", whatever that means. So I will stick to greyish white.
