Tricks to hold flywheel to tighten nut

I am at the point in my rebuild where I am reinstalling the flywheel. When I tighten the flywheel shaft nut, the flywheel/crankshaft turns and I can't tighten it to the 100 ft-lb tight per specs. Is there a trick to holding the flywheel on place to tighten the nut, without damaging any powerhead or lower unit parts? The powerhead is laying on its side currently in workbench, not yet installed on the lower unit/drive shaft.

A chain wrench will work as well, if you don't want a use once and forget about it tool

Ok that's helpful. Related question: I used pb blaster to remove flywheel, and left it wet when I put it back on before I read that the flywheel and shaft should be clean and dry before install to keep it from coming loose while running engine. Should I remove it again, clean and reinstall, or do you typically never have an issue with it coming loose when oily?

It should be installed clean and dry.----The key locates the flywheel for proper spark timing.----The flywheel is driven by the locking tapers.-----Yes they are tough to pull for a novice.-----So remove it.----Clean the tapers.----Torque nut to proper value.

Thanks, racerone. Since it's not all tightened down yet I'll pull it and clean. The last thing I want is to have an issue on the water after all these hours on the rebuild. Appreciate all your expert advice!

Yup, I bought one online for $25 last fall.
Can you post a pic of such adjusting tool, having the same issue with a flywheel that can't be locked anywhere on the motor to torque the nut back to specs.

There are other solutions.-----An old belt on a stick used as a strap wrench.----A 1/4" X2" flat bat of steel drilled for those bolts in the flywheel.----All easy to make in a jiffy if you have the stuff and a small budget.

I work in the master rebuild center at cummins .. Fast and easy way is to place a screw driver in the flywheel teeth near that bolt on the out i see in your picture at 3 o clock . As the flywheel turns ,your screw driver will stop agains the bolt and stop turning . My i also say you have to hold the screw driver back so it does not fall out.

Yep, screwdriver in flyheel teeth has worked on all my small block Chevys. Click stop torque wrench works very well.
