Hi all,

New to IBOATS and really excited to get advice from all of you. I am the proud new owner of a 1956 34 foot custom built steel trawler. It has been owned by one gentleman it's entire life and finally had to be pulled and dry docked due to electrolysis corrosion. The hull has 4 holes in total; a couple of 2 inch holes, a 3 foot seam leak and one 4 inch by 4 foot long rusted out area under the engines (twin Ford/Lehman diesels 120HP each). There is some light surface rust in some areas so the idea is to cut out the bad areas after removing both engines, weld in new 4mm steel plate and then sandblast and finish the hull with coal tar epoxy and then some epoxy overlay followed by linear urethane top coat. While doing this, I'll also be inspecting the full hull internally and removing any rust or scale I may find inside. Once done, I'll finish the engine bay with epoxy and urethane. The one thing I'm not sure about is the remainder of the inside of the hull. Should I finish it as well, or leave it unfinished. I've been told that finishing it will just trap moisture and accelerate corrosion. Others say if the hull is dry and docked, then finishing will prevent corrosion. What is the popular opinion?
This is the first years worth of work for me. Once this is done, the idea is to float it and then begin rebuilding the topsides while using it. The topside will need a ton of work, but at least if I'm using the boat while doing it, I can justify the boat to the better half :)
I'm always looking for advice from those that have already been there and done that and know the best way forward. So if anyone has recommendations on how to proceed, please feel free to offer insight.

Thanks all,

E

I should mention, the cost of the boat was free.

Of course nothing is ever free. I figure I'll be into the boat for about 35000 once everything is done. But I'm hoping to get it floating for around 5000 by doing all of the work myself. I'm an aircraft engineer and have a large amount of welding experience for commercial airframes and power plant overhaul on turbine, gas and diesel engines. It's the building the topside that I have zero experience.

blast everything as a rust removal blast (inside and out) (note, take it somewhere that does blasting as this is the type of work you hire out)
replace anything that is suspect, weak, corroded or cracked. a plasma cutter and a welder will be your best tools
make sure to back-gouge every weld to get 100% penetration (hull plate requirement)
blast everything again (paint prep blast)
self etch primer
paint everything (inside and out)
I recommend DuPont Axalta (the marine version of Imron)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies and thanks for the advice Scott, will do the prep work as you described. When painting the inside hull, I'll try to run dehumidifiers right up until it's time to paint so that I can keep relative moisture to a minimum.
I can't post pics yet as I'm still not fully approved to do so. I'll put a link in here soon to a file sharing app and put all the pics in it.

Im sure theres people that will come to you for the blasting of the hull.I think you would need a sturdy 1/2 ton to tow that boat:joyous::joyous:

Hi 82,

They're going to have to come to me as I don't have a trailer or truck. Boat is at the marina till she floats. 😉 Should help me with wanting to get this done quickly.

Okay, that could be an issue then. I may need to get a flatbed hauler to take it to a shop for that phase.
