I've recently purchased a 1973 Glastron Carlson CV-19ss. First boat, first project, first anything. I won't be doing any of the actual restoration myself. This boat needs everything from trailer work, minor hull fixes, engine rebuild, and complete interior work. I have no idea where to start and contacted a boat repair company here in the DFW area and the $$$ he was talking about were much more than I would have ever anticipated. (ex. $250/ft on gel coat, $2k-$3k on structural, and $3k-$4k on interior and carpet) I'm dropping the boat off this weekend and he'll give me a free estimate and line out some priorities for me, but I'm just wondering if anyone would have a general idea as to whether or not this is an ok price for these types of things. I was excited, but this guy has got me a little discouraged....any information would really help.

Thanks!

Welcome to iBoats!
Most of the guys on here do our own work. Most of us were totally in the dark when it came to working on boats when we started but with the great help of all the Great guys on here we were able to "Git er dun" with GREAT results. The Prices you were quoted are probably reasonable for someone "In the business" He has to make a profit. You COULD save your self a LOT of money by doing most of the work your self. The interior work might be the only thing that you would need to have done. It is a lot of work but NOT beyond your ability IF you have the desire and motivation. Check out some of the threads on here and see what some of the guys have done. They were all just like you but had the desire to learn and create a nice boat in the end.

hmmmm....

first......hi welcome to iboats :).

the prices he quoted are on the rich side....but in line with the market.

but those are expensive prices for your boat.

250 bux a foot for gellcoat.....that is for a complete re gell, and your boat does not need it.

they will cut a deal at 2 grand for the hull (transom stringers deck and minor gellcoat re-surfacing) for that boat. (no interior)

the bottom line is that if you do it your self you may break even on the boat...that is to say,
that you may sell the boat for what you have into it....but with its age its iffy.
if you have it professionally done....its gonna be 5 grand to do the hull and interior, then the motor (what ever that is will be any where from 2 to 5 grand.

that is a possible 10 grand for a $3000 boat.

ok....your options....

sell the boat as a project boat, and look for a newer working boat.

professionally repair the boat. pay the money but be prepaired to loose it if you sell the boat.

do it yourself for a winter project, and in the spring you will have a brand new boat.

i hope that helped you in some way.

cheers
oops

by the way.....did i mention that the glastron carlson boat was used in the james bond movie "live and let die" it was the most famous boat chase ever filmed.

Woodonglass,
Thanks for the reply. After hearing what that guy had to say, yes, I'll definitly be doing as much of the work myself as I can. After picking up the boat this past weekend, I just got really excited and inpatient with the whole process. There will be a huge learning curve, but I wouldn't eliminate this hobby turning into a life-long love once it's all done.

oops!,
Thanks for your comment as well! The reason I ask is that I have no idea. If go through with it, I'll most likley never sell this boat, in other words, not in it for the profit, mainly in it for the thrill of owning a legendary boat. I have a few comments on what you say my options are:

sell the boat: I bought this boat for trailer and all $500 cash, as is. I'd like your opinion on that and what you think I could sell it for as is.

do the repair myself: where the hell do I start? pull the motor? The middle of the floor is soft, so there's some figuring out to do there. The motor is a early 70s model Olds 455. And this is also a jet boat which you can't see from the picture. I don't mean to pester, I just don't know and it's tough to find anything on carlsons...

I love the winter project idea, but I don't see myself being done in that few of months....

Thanks!

As you've found out, you don't buy an old boat and plan to pay someone else to fix it up. It's just not even CLOSE to a good financial idea. You'll have over $10k into a boat worth maybe $2k going that route. So as mentioned, this is pretty much a DIY job or ditch it an get something else.

Unfortunately I also don't think this is a very good candidate for restoration period. In my opinion a boat needs to have at least 1 or 2 things going for it. A good solid hull not missing any crucial parts, a nice interior, a running non-obsolete powerplant, and/or a nice trailer. I don't think you've got any of that. Plus jet drives have their fans but they are terribly inefficient. If I were you I'd ditch it and find a boat with an outboard or a Mercruiser I/O. If you want to get on the water cheaply, you simply cannot beat an aluminum hull with an outboard.

Ezmobee has a LOT of wisdom in his Post. If you don't have some kind of Sentimental attachment or other motivation to bring this boat back to life then I would have to agree with EZ!!!!!!

You Paid $500.00. The trailer looks to be in pretty good shape so you should be able to get $200.00 for it $300 for the boat and you got your money back.
I'd ask $600.00 and come down to $500.00

Yeah it's certainly not worth any more than you paid for it. List it for $500 and pray.

I am looking for one to part out for a boat i am restoring. Mine looks just like the one from the bond move. When i mean looks like i mean same color, same style, same everthing. it could be the one from the movie who knows. Can you post more detailed pics of whole boat. From front to back and everything between. Where are you located and 500 is what you will sell it for????

I just purchased a beautiful 1975 CV19s/s. Where would I be able to find a speedo cable and more importantly a reverse cable?
Thank you very much!
