Hey Folks!
Today I started to tear apart my Starcraft that I picked up last month. I started by getting all of the carpet out. It was pretty crappy stuff. Then I proceeded to remove the TREATED plywood. The PO must not have known that aluminum and treated ply don't mix. Anyway, I then removed all of the flotation and that stuff was pretty bad. Some of the foam sections weight at least 5 or so pounds due to the fact that they were so water logged. I don't know how to upload pictures on this so some help would be appreciated.

Thanks All!

Hey Folks, Here are the pictures. I've really got my work cut out for me. She's getting new paint, electrical, navigation, new flotation, and an aluminum floor.

As you can see she was pretty rough. Here is the photo of when I when I was finished. I am only in high school so I'm pretty busy with football during the summer but I should make good progress.

That's not rough. That's just typical old boat bilge. That boat is in great shape. Next step is to powerwash the inside and then apply Gluvit to all your rivets and seams. A quart can will be enough.

Good job on the pictures. However they're a little big. Resize them to 640x480 which you can do in photobucket easily.

The boat is basically at a stand-still right now. I got her all cleaned up and power-washed the other day so she's ready for sanding etc. But before I do any more work to the boat I'm going to blast the trailer and put a few coats of gloss black on it then fabricate new light brackets and put the new lights on. After that I'm going to fabricate new and improved guide-ons then replace the rotten bunks and extend them so it's easier to load. I'll put up pics once I start the work on the trailer (I'll be sure to resize this time lol).

Until Next Time.

Joe- Yes, it is a 16 footer so it's the perfect size for lakes in my area....also the reason why I'm ditching the stick steer, most of the lakes in my area are not only small but enforce no wake. After I bought my first boat, a friend of my dads gave me a gem of an Evinrude 9.9 so it's here to stay. Also much thanks for the link to that brochure. My boat is a tiller set up but heck maybe it used to be a steering setup. Thanks for your interest!:D

I have a tiller steer set up in my Mariner. It is pretty spacious. Here is a link to my first post on it.

I have since rebuilt the front deck and replaced all the bad wood. Today I am finishing up the carpet and putting everything back on it. I'll post a before and after soon.

The front deck is really nice for fishing. It gets you a little higher off the water and feels like a newer bass boat. Plus you can create more storage. I put my batteries in it to even out the weight because it doesn't get on the plane very well with all the weight in the back.

Anyway Good Luck. It's a fun boat to work on.

Hey guys,
Sorry for the long wait, I forgot to take my camera with me when I restored the trailer but here are the pictures of it now. I started to sand the bottom side of the boat today and it's going well. I had to quit early though because it's really cold here in Iowa (Heat index; 105). I plan to use Petit Paint and I don't know what kind to use. I want a white or a gold for the bottom so if you could tell me which type of paint I need for that. I want to paint the topside a dark/rich red so if you could also tell me which type is best for that.

Just finished all of the sanding yesterday. She's getting masked today and then it's off to paint. I did some research and decided on a jet black. The paint that I'm using is stronger than most automotive finishes let alone marine finishes.

Did the jet black on mine just recently. I have already regretted it. Only because it gets dirty instantly! Tons of water spots and dirt, water residue and so on. I wish I would have kept the bottom part of the boat the aluminum finish and about 1/3 from the top and up painted it grey. Saw a few boats like that and it looked great and didn't show spots!

Anyway, been my experience. And I have the exact same boat as you!

Yeah, I said the heck with the jet black. I'm going with a red for the topside and a white for the bottom. We just painted my brothers truck with the white and it's solid.

Re: 1970 Starcraft Mariner Restoration

Just got the Glu-Vit that I ordered from the marine store here at iboats. I had to replace the bow section of the topside because it was riddled with holes from the PO trying to mount the trolling motor. I'll put the before and after pics up asap.

Re: 1970 Starcraft Mariner Restoration

Great day today. Got all of the glu-vit put on the boat and I'm impressed. While putting it on I thought it looked a little sketchy but once it dried I was in love. Also got the new bow piece in. The water in the boat was on purpose as I was checking for any serious leaks. BTW sorry for the crappy quality pics, they were taken on my phone.
Until Next Time. :D

Just wanted to chime in and tell you "Great job!" That boat looks pretty sharp and has "let's go drown some worms" written all over it! Glad to see that you're a young man with his priorities in order, boating/fishing & football. Some of the things that make life worth living. Good luck on your project sir.
