Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

My steering wheel came yesterday and I will have tonight and tomorrow night to work on the boat! I am going to attempt to hook up the steering cable cable tonight:eek: I don't want to screw this up so i started another thread to get any advice for hooking up the cable.

I will post pics tonight or tomorrow of the wheel and the hopefully hooked up steering cable:D

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Tonight I got the rotary steering installed! Before I did that I had to temporarily install my new steering wheel. I love the wheel- it has a classic look to it and it is stainless so it should outlast the boat.

The steering was easier to install than I thought. I was worried about it the last couple of days but it was actually easier than I thought. I will post a video on the install below.

Again, everything i am doing now will be coming back out in a week or so so i can start the sanding and prep for paint. Before I take everything back out I have to wait for the speedometer and tachometer to come in. Once i cut out for them and test fit them I will flip the top and begin my prep work for paint!

I got the radio wiring figured out too. I am going to run the yellow wire to the positive fuse block. The red accessory wire I will run a two way switch so I can turn it off at the end of the day. I will probably mount a switch under the dash so it is out of the way.

Here are the pics from tonight.

Here is the steering system I went with- teleflex rotary system with no feedback

Looking good Mick, nice video. I had to send my rack back yesterday....naturally it was a 1' too long! Oh well, I should have the shorter one in a week or so! What color paint did you pick for the top? Seems like you were going with blue?

EZ- I think you were the one that recommended the rotary system to me. It was pretty easy to install.

Arch- yeh I'm going with the ocean blue. How bout I trade you for your longer cable! I have no clue, but I have a feeling that my cable is about a foot short:eek: I gave the guy at my boat place the measurements that he wanted but my cable goes just to the end of the gunnel. I know they have a kit that they are going to install for me when i'm all done painting for my motor. But still, I think what I have now is to short. We'll see.

Hey Mick,
Nice video.
I'm sure you won't regret going with the new steering. I would have hated to hear you were on the lake going in circles.
That wheel really does look good with your boat too.
Nice job.

Thanks Bob! When you are doing all this work it only makes sense to upgrade things;)

Tonight I put in the switch for my radio red and yellow wires(I didn't have any red wire left- that's why it's green).

Well that looked pretty easy Micks. I am still debating on keeping my original cables or going with the Teleflex. Your install might be the straw that broke the camels back on that decision. Thanks for the video. Soon as I get Momma happy with the Bathroom remodel I can get back on my 62 Flamingo
Keep up the GREAT work.

Good Luck on that bathroom remodel- been there, done that! I would definitely recommend updating the steering. For $200 you can have a nofeedback system minus the cables. I had to update mine- why do all the work only to regret a decision later on.

Not much to report tonight- my speedo and tach won't be in until Monday. So tonight I went ahead and removed everything from the dash and started filling the areas where the tach and speedo will go. After the filler dries I will drill the holes out and I'll be ready to flip her and start filling all the miscellaneous stuff so I can get to sanding and paint!!! Tonight I also epoxied all the areas that were cut out(the drilled out wood areas in the dash).

I'll post everything once I'm done with the filler on the dash- tomorrow or Saturday.

ok mick teleflex looks good as well as all of the dash. However I have a question. I can't see all of the wires in the pic of the radio. so here is my question: if the red wire coming from the radio was converted to green, is the yellow wire that is conected to the switch coming from a power source? or is it the yellow wire from the radio?

your answer will tell me if I need to suggest a change or not.

He green wire is attached to the "acc red" from the radio. The yellow wire is connected to the "+ yellow" from the radio and the positive wire that goes to the positve fuse block.

It better work- I've gone over that a thousand times on here and at my boat place! Do you have a thread going? We just had our 10th game yesterday so we are at the halfway point! I am hoping to have the paint on her before baseball season is over though:rolleyes: I'm being very optimistic.

If I get done with the filler tonight on the dash I may even be able to flip her by the end of the weekend. That would leave topside paint in the next week or two:eek:

Hey arch! I'm out here now, waiting on my second round of filler to dry. Gotta hit a couple areas one more time. I also got all the holes in the rubrail filled, and all the miscellaneous holes in the gunnel filled. I'll post some pics later.

As far as flippin her- technically speaking I could do that right now. I will try to assemble some guys for Sunday to help flip her top:D

Like I said in my earlier post- tonight I got the filler in the areas that needed it on the dash, along the gunnel, and all of the rubrail. I also got the bow area cleaned up of all the tools and such ready for her to be flipped over! I sent out the text to recruit some help for sometime Sunday to flip her.

Here are the pics from tonight.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Looking at the pics I think what we are going to do is bring the hull back in the garage and place it on the supports I made for it and then place the cap on the hull right away. That will eliminate a step in having to do that later, plus I will finally be able to cut the grass in my back too:D

Still waiting on the trailer until the end too in case you were wondering:)

Do you have a thread going?

Not yet, I am at a stale mate in my finances the recession has finally hit here and since I am in sales the pay checks havent been so wano lately. Lots of work not many results. I have cut the deck out but I don't have the funding to get the reisen to continue so I am holding off on starting my thread till I get some extra moola.

I am also considering getting my teaching certs for a little change of pace in my career. I have a degree but it is in not in education so I am researching what the best route would be to do it. Texas has some programs that allowas you to get a probationalry cert which allows you to be paid while you are doing the student teaching. I am just looking for the program that fits me the best.
