Well, with the help of EZ and excuseme I may be able to show pics of my baby. Since you gentlemen were kind enough to teach and entertain me I figured I would give ya'll something to laugh about while I attempt my resto. I have my trusty screwdriver, hack saw and blow torch ready. Obviously, I will welcome all advice, questions, and criticism. I have to be ready for Tinstock:D

Rick, a live what? Heck fire man I just learnt how to post pics, now a live MSN ? You would have to teach me that one.:)
Bwana, its 18 ft, I think the year is 63 but may be a 62 and I am guessing its a Starchief. I am sure someone will set me straight. We finally got a decent weekend without rain ( past five did rain ) so me and the Admiral are going to start ripping her apart today. Guess I gotta start somewhere:rolleyes: I think I am looking forward to comments more than sanding the bottom of the boat. Had a thought though, maybe I can put a motor on the back and run her over a few sandbars....think that would work?

Very cool boat. And good job on posting the pics. Good luck with your project! Going to be a lot of work but these tin boats aren't bad to redo.

Fshngho Live is the new version of MSN messenger if you google ( Live messenger ) you should be able to find it pretty easy . Theres quite a few of us Starcrafters that get together to chat several times a week EZ,CheapboatKev ,Northbeach , Huron Angler and several others including myself . The conversations sometimes even are about our boats LOL. Once you have an ID just post it up here and one of us will add you to our buddy list and get you into chat . We usually get together between 7PM and 10-11PM depending on the night and not everyone joins in on every chat . We even have a few members who join in that dont have Starcrafts ( YET ) LOL.

Thanks to all. I got started today like I promised myself, but I wanted to make a couple observations: 1. Seems everyone does this in dead winter for a reason, I have never seen so many ANTS and WASPS in my life. ( thanks for the warning ) did you think I was smart enough to know better? 2. If I invest in a styrofoam and rivot company now, I will make enough money to complete this project. 3. I want to kiss the person that invented the battery drill and kill the person that invented the flat tip screw. Well, here she is after I raped her today.

Bwana, right now I don't think I need to replace the transom. Wood and metal are good. Before I put it in the yard earlier this year I had a 135 Merc on the back and didn't have any problems. But....I posted pics of her this morning and went out to it with the intention of just cleaning out he crap. That turned into " Hey, why don't I check the floor?" I pulled the carpet and found an extra layer of 1/2" ply... pulled that up and saw a very rotten floor:mad: It was ON. I had to pull side panels, then driver and passenger dashes (?) Then the floor.;) Oh what the heck, might as well pull out the cabin area too..5 hrs--1 gallon tea--1 zillion rivots--and a couple flesh wounds later, I vaccumed it out along with a few thousand ants and TAA-DAA:D Killer back ache but a smile on my face. So Bwana, to make it short (lol) I really don't know what the heck I will do next. I see power washing, glu-vit, and minor body work in the future. Then probably sanding:mad: and then paint. Simple right?

Powerwashing worked good for me.. but I have to wonder if there is a pre-treat or something you can add to help the cleaning process.. maybe like SodaBlasting it..

Good work so far. I powerwashed mine today in prep for the Gluvit. Came out pretty good (pics in my thread). Yours is looking good. Got a question though, how do you drive that thing? Are you supposed to look over the roof? or through the cabin through the windshield? (nevermind, I just looked back at the brochure picture and see the second windshield on the top.)

Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

EZ, thats a darn good question. When I had it out I couldnt sit in the cap'n chair and see over the roof. I would either have to bend down and try to see through the extremely scuffed and scratched windshield or stand up. Neither one was comfortable or gave me a safe view. I am thinking of chopping the top a little along with a newer style windshield. I didn't just take on a resto, I am also going to do modifications if I can. I would like to stay original, but comfort and safety come first, that is unless someone has a better idea.

Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

Sorry about the time lapse, I had to go to Texas for a short visit per the Admirals orders:p. Anyway, I am getting back to work. I do however have a question for the seasoned vets or anyone else that has ideas. How would I go about flipping a monster like my boat over? It obviously has a top and I was going to remove it for modifications anyway, but I know when I flip it I will need to get her upright without paint damage. Any suggestions?

Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

fishingho sweet vessel !

why not look over the Islanders set up seating and all in front the same!
No need to really cut such a sweet ole roof up !
Should not be hard too see if setup ame as Islander...

If you do remove roof and wanna turn her over, it can be easily done with a small bucket truck/ boom type truck, a couple old tires and an old matress.

also a couple of decent nylon tow straps are needed for cradling to set on trailer.

youd be suprised how easy it really is with an empty hull !

place the cushioning devices under the transom area , stand it straight up then lower it onto its top.

Lift it straight up horrizontally and place the tires and some 2x6 or similar across trailer and go to prepping and painting.

keep all your cushioning devices for returnin her to the up-right position, place it back on the trailer and finish atop !

Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

Thanks fish, I kinda had that in mind but I don't have access to a boom unless I rent one. I want to keep the roof, but I really don't like the windshield as is. Its scratched, dull and cracked. I was going to put a flat walk thru on it like so many guys have done and maybe shorten the roof about a couple feet to give more room in the stern ( fishing and seating ). I like the roof as I have grandkids and I like the idea of using her in all weather, minus lightening or hurricanes of course. And your right, I just came in from checking it out. I can lift the whole dang stern off the trailer by myself. Not bad for an old fart:D

Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

We just flipped mine. Completely stripped out, the hull is surprisingly light (assuming you remove the roof). I lined up 4 guys, inculding myself. We walked it off the trailer onto the grass and set it down. We then flipped it onto 3 furniture dollies on my driveway and pushed it into the garage. Painting starts today!

ezombee you must be younger than some here ! lol

yes have done many things that way in the past but have usually access to equipment and prefer mechanical over Manual these days .

We have done a few and some where fiberglass so the having it lifted was much easier this way and it just became (standard procedure)
