Re: What do you pull your boat with?

i tow my 16 ft thompson (3000 lbs) with my 93 ford explorer v6 4X4 xlt. Total on the scale it is 7,000 (lbs). The acceleration is a little slower than usual, but once it gets up to 55 it drives fine. It is a little slow going up a hill. the only thing is the braking takes longer to stop. Just give yourself plenty of room to stop

Re: What do you pull your boat with?

I have the 3800 engine same as your GP. It does labour in towing. I do not use overdrive. I installed a 24000 transmission cooler. Fuel economy towing at 100 kph or 60 mph was 13-14 mpg. The boat and trailer weigh 3500 and the hitch is rated 3500 lbs. GM rates all there cars at 1000 lb towing capacity. It brakes like its not even there, handles pretty much the same but accelleration is a bit weak but I take it easy. The problem is boat ramps....no traction to pull the boat back out of the water. Some ramps are fine but needs to be a good ramp. We also have a 95 Jimmy 4wd and power to weight is the same as the buick, and the Jimmy is just as useless pulling but the rwd pulls out of boat ramps effortlessly.

Pete
Ya'll really don't see anything wrong with towing 2500 lbs MORE than the rated capacity???? The hitch may be rated for 3500, but the VEHICLE ISNT!!!

You are insane.

Re: What do you pull your boat with?

1988 Celebrity 210V towed by a 2000 Olds Silhouette (Long wheelbase version)

The boat is on a tandem axle trailer, usually weighing in at around 5000 pounds. We never tow more than a few miles, the farthest we have towed was 20 miles round trip. As we are limited by our tow vehicle. It stops good, and is perfectly stable. It has even towed the boat to the ramp packed with 7 fullsized guys (each weighing atleast 150). Although we took the backroad at like 25mph, instead of the 50mph road.

The van is getting old and is due to be replaced before the next season. Will post a pic soon

I pull a 97 Rinker Captiva 232 with my 2002 Denali XL. Its supercharged and has no power problems and really doesn't seem to know that its hauling 6000 pounds. Rides fine and no problems on ramps with AWD. We haul it cross country in May and return to Arizona in late October. Yes, mileage is poor at about 11.5 mpg, but worth it.

Regards from Arizona,

Cole

I pull the 1950 Bayliner with 2000 Nissan Xterra 3.3L V6 4wd, with towing package. No problems so far... But I only just bought the boat, and basically pulled it from the dealer into storage. :( The only other boat I've pulled was a 17' aluminum Smokercraft single console, 40 hp johnson. ( a friends boat I used this summer for a week fishing ) I can tell my Bayliner seems about double the weight. I'll just take it slow...........

I used to pull my 19 ft Barron cuddy fully loaded with my 01 f150 scab. Thought it was great until I got a Ram 2500 this summer. What a difference! Can't even tell it's there!

2004 ford sport trac. Works well except for the bigger hills around here in PA. I just let it tell me what is a comfortable speed for move at let it do it.

Re: What do you pull your boat with?

1990 Lincoln Towncar with a 500 caddy motor, th-400 and 4.10 gears with trac-lok to tow a 1974 22' sea ray. I'd put the boat and trailer at around 5,000lbs? Got the Lincoln for free and the cad with trans for $300. Gotta travel in style with caddy torque. Should be a fun easy spring project before the boating season begins. Good thing I'm going back to school to get my mig and tig certs this semester.:) Got a felling i may have to do a little cut and paste.:D

Looking forward to towing small homes,
Jeramie

Re: What do you pull your boat with?

I pull my 16' Skeeter with my 2000 Yukon Denali. I also pull an enclosed trailer, a flat bed trailer with a skid steer, etc with the Denali .... overkill for the boat, but not so much for the other loads.

Re: What do you pull your boat with?

My current running boat is a 14' MFG Niagara with a 40hp Suzuki on a 1972 Sea King trailer. I tow it with a Saturn LS 4-door sedan with an 1800cc engine. It does well, believe it or not, but gravel ramps are sometimes tough with front wheel drive ;)

PS- I still get 22-26mpg while towing, and my boat is usually loaded with fishing gear, downriggers, two batteries, tackle boxes, cooler, etc. That is was a nice feature this past summer!
