After a couple of years of negotations I picked up this tin boat for a reasonable price

SANY2560.jpg

The trailer was rusted beyond any resonable repair, so, the search was on.

thanks for friends this trailer came up

SANY2558.jpg

The trailer is way SWEET and more deserving of hauling my sleeker more cool fiberglass chick magnet. And will end up that way.

Anyway here are some pics of the new project

SANY2562.jpg

Can you say ROT

SANY2565.jpg

Thanks to my boys we got the boat on the ground and pulled the outboard today

SANY2576.jpg

I'll post some more pics for you junkies tomorrow, this is gonna be my skinny water ride, not a restore, A refit, back to stock. Move the storage seat back behind the side console, new deck, new flotation, new benches, I'm thinking Ash for the benches. Comments and suggestions are more than welcome.

I only hope I don't cut myself and hemorage out.

Nice Starcraft, sounds like a great plan. Maybe your fishing boat could be a chick magnet too.!!!

Re: '77 Starcraft Kingfisher 16

Gonna end up giving this boat to my middle son for his 16th birthday. He's a lot better looking than I am so maybe he can do some good with it.

Transom out. Pulled up the last section of deck. Foam is saturated, no real corrosion despite the PO's use of PT for the deck.

SANY2581.jpg

Just gonna cut the gunwhale for clearance

SANY2582.jpg

SANY2585.jpg

I used a piece of 3/4 I had been using for a fiberglassing table, maybe that will make the boat cooler :D

SANY2588.jpg

It cleaned up nice, I used titebond III to laminate

SANY2597.jpg

A little more sanding and shaping, finally got to use my oscilating spindle sander IT IS SWEET

SANY2600.jpg

Drilled all the through penetrations oversize and filled with some PB just for overkill

SANY2601.jpg

That's where I'm at. Now I'm going to play a round of golf for my birthday

While waiting for the first coat of epoxy on the transom, we went ahead and stripped the boat

SANY2606.jpg

No tools needed from here

SANY2603.jpg

SANY2605.jpg

And down to the first rinse

SANY2608.jpg

Only have six weeks to finish this so I'm trying to make a little progress every day.

Re: '77 Starcraft Kingfisher 16

Working on a tinny is like instant gratification.

I'd be three weeks into a glass boat to get where I'm at after three days.

Any one contemplating a first time boat restore should start with an aluminum boat.

Should have the transome finished and the outboard mounted back up by next sunday.

Foam should start on wednesday.

Couple of pics for you junkies.

SANY2614.jpg

Second coat of epoxy going on aft side this thing should be bomb proof

Just got off the phone with ron popeil, he assures me we have enough stock to cover the mass influx of orders for the patented BILGE WICK. And for you MBS sufferers, today only, with your first order he will include a third patented bilge wick manufactured from only the highest quality cotton T shirts.

Re: '77 Starcraft Kingfisher 16

Nice thread. I will be following this. I have wanted to do a rebuild like this for some time now. I have done sleds and quads so the next is an aluminum boat. I have a 89 bayliner capri that is a prime candidate, but I want an aluminum. I just missed a 1975 18 foot starcraft in the local papers. It was FREE. the interior was shot as well as the leg on the engine but the hull was in good shape. The guy just wanted it out of his yard. Would have been a good project.

Keep the pictures coming.

Re: '77 Starcraft Kingfisher 16

The weather has not been cooperating, torential downpours, high humidity not condusive to epoxy work.

I finally got four coats on and will start the UV protection today.

Made up a new motor pad out of 1/4 aluminum

SANY2618.jpg

All drilled up and reliefs for the reevits it covers

SANY2622.jpg

Not much progress but life really got in the way this week

I like the alum OB plate but quick question...

If ya pop rivets in, won't they be sticking into the transom, eh?

Re: '77 Starcraft Kingfisher 16

Ther are only four pop rivits two on either side to hold the end caps on, Those were drilled and filled also.

The reliefs are for the bottom transom bracket rivets, they are below the wood core. The original or pad was wood so the rivets just sank into the wood, along with a little water, poof, corrosion. The lower motor mount bolts are below the transom wood

It was a beautiful day today and we got three coats of polyurethane on today. Only one week behind now....
