can someone please help me? I have just bought a 1977 winner bass boat. upon inspecting i found that the majority of the transom is rotted out. I was wondering if i do in fact have to pull the whole cap off the boat to replace it. the flooring below the gas tank does seem to be in good shape. Was wondering if there was any way I could cut the back of the transom out saving the fiberglass shell and replace the plywood then replace the shell and do it that way. Any suggestions??? would appreciate the help... thanks

Don't cut the outside of the transom. It's a pain to repair. Needs to be replaced from the inside if you can.

Welcome to Iboats! It can be done without pulling the cap on some boats.

its 30 yrs old, its a good bet the stringers are rotted.
I'm doing my stringers and transom, its easier to pull the cap but not absolutely necessary. some pics would get you more opinions.
I opted for a seacast poured transom, no more wood.

well, I've decided to pull the cap and check the stringers and do the transom repair that way. Had to clean out a spot in the shop for this project. I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post them. I was going to pull the motor off and get it ready tonight, but the weather isn't cooperating. Is anyone here familiar with winner boats? This is my first time doing this, so all the help i could get would sure help.

Welcome to Iboats and see you are from Oklahoma to. If you remove the insert from the rub rail you will see either screws or rivets under the cover. Remove all these and the rubrail comes off and that is where the joint is that seperates the hull from the cap. It may be caulked or spot glued down so be careful when you lift it up and cut those areas. My little Ouachita bass boat was easy to rebuild after I seperated it.

im not certain........but mabe.....just mabe.....your transom is rotten :D

you dont HAVE to remove the doors.....but it will make the cap lighter when you pull it....if you are using a crane or a sort.....no....in fact id tape them shut as the will help with the rigidity of the cap......

there is a good chance the strings are gone too bud......if so.....make sure the hull is supported properly fron underneath before you rip the strings out.

how do you suggest i support the hull? is the trailer not enough to support it when i take the stringers out?
