You're Welcome already!!!!

Last year I was listening to a call-in show on NPR and a caller made an excellent point. The Proper response to "Thank you" is "You're welcome". So why do most people these days make it into a contest? "THANK you." "Thank YOU." It's Rude! Here the first party is generously offering an olive branch and the responder is putting it back in his/her face which demands a response when the conversation should be over. I never really noticed it before that call, but it's almost always true and it bugs me every time I hear it. At least 85% of the time I hear "Thank YOU" in response to Thank you. What do YOU say when somebody thanks you?

Re: You're Welcome already!!!!

"You're welcome" should always be the first response. Then if clarification or thanks is to be given, it can come after the appropriate response.<br /><br />ie:<br />"Thank-You."<br />"You're Welcome. But I also need to thank you for the input and help you gave ..."<br /><br />or "You're Welcome. But the thanks really should go to you ..."

"You're Welcome" beats the hell out of "No Problem". Where did "No Problem" come from anyway??

Saying "you're welcome" to a teenager, is like asking them to make change without a cash register. <br /><br />They get thet bewildered look on their face and start to cry.

Re: You're Welcome already!!!!

I have to admit to "No problem" with cutomers. I try very hard to say "You're welcome" to the kids, but sometimes I hum it (MM mmm). Most of the rest of the time it's "You're welcome", especially after hearing that caller. I never really gave it much thought before then. I was probably frequently guilty before that, thinking that "Thank YOU" was the "more" polite thing to say. Kind of a contest of who's more gracious ... which is kinda oxymoronic if you think about it. ;)

When I deal with customers, I tend to say "your welcome", but sometimes they are being sarcastic, so a "uh huh" is what they get.
