Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

Used to drag net for bait below the waterfall when we were young and caught three very large carp which we carried with a broom stick over our shoulders. The tails dragged the ground! No bs.

As an adult I was fishing a tournament we had at work. I was going to a place up in the swamp and another fella was coming out. He said there was a big one hitting but not taking top water. An old swamp rat I worked with told me to p... it off by making as much noise as I could. He sat back in his boat and laughed when I ripped that big Lunker-Lure across the water. That bass did hit and I caught it winning the tournament. She was eight and three quarters and the taxidermist said if I caught it before it spawned, it would have been over ten. That was and is the biggest bass I have ever caught. Most folks around here won't mount if under ten, but an old Wisconsin boy like me just isn't used to something that big.

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

Was up North in the Fall doing some Walleye fishing........

Had a bite on one of my rods and was able to get the fish hooked. Bringing it in it was obvious the thing was small and we wouldn;t keep it. To give a little background it was 30F and snowing and windy.......the last thing I want to do is get my hands wet (unless I had to). So instead of flipping the little bugger into the boat, I let it dangle over the side as it was barely hooked. After a few seconds of shaking the walleye fell off.........When the walleye was a few inches from the surface ( after falling from my hook)a Musky had apparently been chasing it and came out of the water to get it. A pretty decent sized Musky of at least 45" prolly closer to 50+" came flying out of the water a foot from the boat, and just hammered that poor walleye. Had the thing stayed on the hook i most assuradly would've lost that rod. :p

Heres a one that didnt happen to me but gets told everytime my dad and uncle get together. my dad and uncle were fishing a flowage and they were catching some Walleyes........my uncle had one on and about halfway to the boat a Musky nailed it. They get it to the boat ( and this is why the story gets told) and my dad is trying to net it. He tried netting it from the belly instead of head first. The Musky was too big to fit in the net that way and flopped out, as it hung over both sides. They did manage to boat the 23" Walleye the musky was dining on. To this day i hear that story as "the biggest Musky my uncle ever had hooked"

Caught a snapping turtle once crappie fishing.........not more than 20 minutes later a Northern Pike attacked my bobber like it was a lure........I guess they really do love red/white combos.

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

An uncle of mine was killed, though indirectly, by a bass. He caught a fine fish, over five pounds, and promptly put it on the stringer, took it home, and had his wife bake it for the family dinner. That night he dreamt of the fish coming to get him, and soon the dream was full of all the fish he had ever killed coming to eat him in his turn. It was so frightening he had a heart attack and died without ever waking up. Our whole family has practiced catch-and-release ever since.

---------------------
'You kill it, you eat it."

wwwwww: Gee, I think you are the only one who doubts me. Congratulations. The story is so iffy I had to tell it twice.

When I was a little boy, I would go to sleep in our fishing shack listening to the hoary old uncles telling their same old hoary stories. It was like sweet dreams, one of the best times of life.

Yarnspinnning weaves us into a tribe, as we all know. Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

wwwwww: Old war stories, too, I see. About that time, I lived in Dayton OH, and we waited for the bombers every night. They never got that far. I used to fish off the front porch with a stick and string and a sinker in the big puddle in the driveway. Never caught nothin', neither. My wife was a tiny girl then and spent the war with sister and mother in Santo Tomas Internment camp in Manila. No fishing there, either. We need to get our stories in the record, guys--time slides by and soon there won't be anyone else to rememeber the important things.

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

Second thought: Since we are big believers in "story," I'd like to know if the folks told stories in the dark down there in the shelters. I remember lights out, but I don't remember that we had to keep quiet. This is a fishing site, so I also have to ask if you've seen "Hope and Glory" with the great scene in which the stray Luftwaffe bomber drops his extra in the river and the little kids get a ton of fish!

-----------------
"Fishin' ain't as good as it used to be, and it never was."

wwwwww: Did you have more than one childhood story? I still have the one from your tenth year, when the pike bit off your big sunfish.

I'm still anxious to know if people told stories in the air-raid shelters.

I, too, am a story guy--made my living teaching college literature. So please tell 'em--you can't go wrong.

-------------------
"Sharks would make things livelier in Lake Michigan"--Hawkeye

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

No stories in the shelter..just fear and wondering if you would live. I was thrown in as my brother and than DAD & MOM jumped in ...Dad closed the door and it was a dark space not knowing what went on outside. That's about it guys.

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

That's quite a story in itself, wwwwww.

It was really foggy here the other day--worse than London, even. I was sitting in the living room when I heard an awful bang. I went out front and sure enough, a big bass had slammed into our picture window. Took her back down to the pond and gave careful first aid; I think she'll be OK. Must have been three-four pounds anyway. I hope she learned to stay home in weather like that.
----------------------
"There is always another story behind the story," says Needy Rick

All right disbelievers, I have proof: later in the day, when the fog finally cleared, I found a bunch of fine bluegills caught in the badminton net. :p

---------------------
Indigent Rico says, "Be sure to set the hook, and don't fall out of the boat. "

There are a few -

me and my twin were out fishing in later april in pa - duck harbor pond, where dad has a cabin, we were just kids, matt, catches a fish and starts yelling and making a commotion, gets his line tangled, another boater nearby starts laughing - he pulls in a 20" brown! The guy stopped laughing!

We were up in oswega out of little souda's bay trying to go fall salmon fishing but the lake was too rough, we trolled in the bay all day, with not a hit, nerves were getting on edge, late in the afternoon we caught a 45 inch musky - we were so mad it was not a salmon we threw it back! Later that night we realized that maybe we should have kept it!

Tomatolord

last July at lake Silverwood (southern cali) I was prowling the coves in my kayak and found a catfish I uess he was 7+ lbs, just loitering in this pool of calm water,I saw him half a dozen times that afternoon, but he would bite on nothing I tried, heck I dragged a whole chicken liver across his back, next morning he was still there, frustrated, I pinned him to the bottom with the blade of my kayak paddle and tossed him in the boat, no one asked how I caught him and I didnt tell....(if ya aint cheatin, ya aint tryin) btw he weighed 7.3...yummy

This fish will haunt you for the rest of your life. Do not drop a paddle overboard; his friends may be waiting for you. Cover your back. Chant incantations to ward off evil. Catfish are learning to walk and soon will be driving motorcycles. Beware.

---------------------------------
As a boy, I was told to be patient. No wonder I never caught any fish.

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

This story goes back to when I was about 14. I lived on a farm with my grandparents and a rainy day in the summer meant a
day of fishing since we couldn't make hay in the rain. On this particular rainy July day we headed to the Tioughnioga River
to catch whatever would bite. We fished a narrow, yet deeper than average hole in the river. We always called this place
"The Old Logs" because, years before, a large tree had uprooted from the bank and fallen into the river. It never washed
down stream. It just remained there and became a petrified ledge, with stone and dirt filling in behind it and back to the
shore. Because of this, the old log became a great place to stand from and fish. We always used any available live bait we
could find, mostly Stony Bullheads, Dobsin, and Crabs. On this particular day, grandpa had found a shoft-shelled crab. He
said shoft-shelled crabs were a delicacy to a fish and he offered it to me for bait. I stuck my hook through the tale and
tossed it as far as it would go, nearly to the other side of the river. It had barely hit the water when I got a strike. I
took up the slack and the fight was on. The fish raced up and down through our fishing hole as I tried to ware it down and
reel it in. I was using and old, worn out zecco outfit and, at some point during the fight, the reel seperated from the rod.
We jammed it back on. By this time the fish was close enough to the shore to see. It was a lowly grass carp, but nearly 40
inches long. Every time we got it close to shore, it got another wind and headed back to deep water. Finally, after about
20 minutes of battle, the line took after the rod and reel. It, too, wore out. The carp lived to fight another day. It may
have been a lowly carp, but, 32 years later, i still haven't had a fish that long on a line. Granpa, a life-long fisherman
on that river, said it was the biggest carp he had ever seen.

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

My buddy Tristan and I took my little boat out for the first time this year a couple of weeks ago, just itching to make that first catch of the year. Well, we fished all day, and all we had caught was one little catfish snagged in the eye by Tristan on a reel-in. Needless to say, I was frustrated and apparentlylet out an exasperating sigh. Tristan says, "What's wrong, buddy? Cold or frustrated?" I reply, "A little of both, I guess" and decide to check my bait. Two cranks on the reel, and BAM! Something big is on the end of my line and my drag is too loose. The fish jumps on the reel-in and "MAN OH MAN, This is the biggest bass I have ever caught!" The fish musta heard me cause she swam right around the back of the boat and "TING" right by the prop and was gone as soon as she was on. So I'm fired up now! I retie and cas right over where the last one hit (beside a big tree) My cast goes over a limb, leaving my bait in the water and my bobber about a foot out. I joke to Tristan, "I'm gonna catch one and let him take it off for me." Yeah right he says. I reel it up a lttle as to try and flip it over the limb, and as the bait is about 3-6 inches ABOVE the water, BAM! Another big bass nailed it. He's flapping and thrashing above the water, and I try to reel him up, and "TING"... Tree cut the line. Just lost two of the biggest fish I ever had on my line, and it's now getting close to sunset, and I don't have my lights with me. Retie real quick, one more cast. Nothing for a few minutes, so we decide to go in. Two cranks on the reel-in, and BAM! Another one is hooked. This one also jumps on the reel in, and my silly butt is having too much fun watching the fish, so she looks right at me when she jumped, smiles and spits out my jig, now stripped of it's minnow and returns to the water. Wow, I didn't boat any, but just had the most action packed 15 minutes I ever had on the water! What a great day on the lake!
