YO wwww Where at IN STL ARE YOU FROM? I too am from stl, ct charles and live right across from Bass pro.
ANYWAY it was when I was in TN fishing KY lake last may fishing some bedding bass with flukes and this HOG of a mother hit the fluke and started dancing for my buddy and I. She jumped once so she could show us how Big she was then hit the water and right under a large tree that She knew was there cause without hesitation BAM the line broke off and she was GONE for ever. We were thinking she was around 7lbs or so cause she couldnt get her whole fatty body out of the water.

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

I was fishing from the bank at a park pond a long time ago and the water was really clear in spring. While standing there I saw a beast of a bass casually swam by in front of me maybe 10ft from the bank. I had my rod in my hand but didn't cast because all I could do was standing there and went OH MY GOD...OH MY GOD..and watch it disappeared.

One time I was fishing lake Champlain and hooked this huge, um, huge, Well I'm not really sure what it was. It was some kind of serpent I think, It was really hard to see and stayed just under the surface. I only had 8 pound test mono and I just couldn't hold it. My line snapped and away it went. :D

LOL out Omc. Once while in Scotland I had a similar incedent. :D

Here is a funny one that happened a few years ago. I was out with my Dad. He is getting up in age and likes to just kick back and troll, so we did. He tied on this tremendous lure he bought. It must of had ten blades on it and was about a foot and a half two feet long. He said he could almost guarantee a fish being caught with it. We trolled the length of the lake and pop decides to reel in his lure. As it got near the boat you could plainly see the thing was not working well at all. He pulled it out and said in his stern voice "This god damned lure aint no good I am throwing it in the lake" I had to chuckle because I saw that he had it tied on back wards :D :D

Fishing a stump/stickup field one day. I bet I hit everything I could see above and below the water with a crankbait. About 3-4' deep, 2' clarity (maybe).
Not a hit one.
Got hung on on a stump. Trolled over, reeled the tip down to the wiggle wart, freed it..was bringing it up and WHAM. Darn near pulled my rod outa my hand and I guess I was lucky I didn't go in as well. (just startled the poop out of me!).
Never saw her...lure was snug against the tip of my rod and the fight lasted about 3 seconds.

Want more?

I was fishing this stump field one day, got about halfway through it, figured I was wasting my time when a fish hit a wiggle wart while it was against the tip of my rod. (you may have heard that story before, but, that's a whole different story).
I fished the rest of that stumpfield with newfound enthusiasm...not a single other hit.
On my way out, I had this particular stump in mind. It was just under the surface and there were a couple of others like it around it. You could be in a certain spot and line all those stumps up to figure out exactly which stump it was that I was looking for.
Well, I spied that stump and was now using a plastic worm. Tossed it over to that stump, let it sink, got a hit, sure enough...the fight was on.
6 seconds later I had half a plastic worm and no fish.....never saw her.

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

This story may not count, but, It was just an interesting experience.

It was a typical Monday at work, I was tellin the guys about my Sunday fishing venture, where this Bass hit a lure while I was reeled down against it. I told them I went back later with a plastic worm and hooked her again...but...no fish.
Realizing my frustration, they all beleived me, and sympathised with me. OR, at least I knew they were in their own way. (friends and co-workers have a way of doing this very effectively). You just have to realize that..
"Yeah rite!" means...."I know what you are going thru".
They are laughing with you, not at you.....

It was a slow day, so, I decided to take one of em with me fishing that evening.
We made our way around this stumpfield that I knew about for about two hours. Not even a tickle.
I had looked everywhere for that magic stump and just couldn't find it. Time to go
As we were leaving, I saw these stumps lined up just below the waterline.
"Hey Chris, theres that stump!!, Watch this!" (usually a rednecks famous last words).
One cast past it with a big ole spinner.... spinner hit the stump and the fight was on.

This doesn't count because I landed her this time, and she wasn't big. (3lb).

It did make the story a bit more interesting the next day at work though.

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

When I was about 10 I was fishing a small, spring-fed pond in the piney woods of the NC sandhills.

I had found a bed of bull bluegills and was cleaning up from shore with my 10' willow pole (couldn't afford bamboo in those days) and a #10 black gnat.

Then I saw this monster bass cruising around the outer edges of the bed area. I whipped the fly into her path and she ate it!!

Well, it was awesome! Bent the pole nearly double, then snapped it in half and disappeared into the distance. :(

Several hours later as I started to leave I spotted the remains of the pole floating at the outer edge of a small, shallow lilypad patch. I wanted my line and that fly, so I waded out and picked it up.

Holy Cow!! Dang near snatched me into the lake! I waded ashore and ran up the bank until she was high and dry. Then I pounced on her like a cat on a rat.

I paraded up Main Street on my way home with a monster bass in one hand and a string of big 'gills in the other. Felt like Caesar returning to Rome after conquering Gaul. Got lots of attention and applause, too. Picture in the local paper. . .barefoot boy with cheek of tan, busted willow pole and the grandest bass anyone had seen in a few years...oh, and a smile from ear to ear.

How big? Heck, I don't know. She was a monster to me then and she remains a monster. You shouldn't put numbers on precious memories.

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

When I was a kid we fished the local creek it was a deep hole of water maby 1.5 mi long. When we catfished we used a lot of drop hooks tied to the tree limbs hanging over the water.
We set our lines late one evening, and baited with perch. Early the next AM we were paddling down the creek running our lines, when we saw one of our drop lines pull the whole tree limb under. I just knew we had the grandady of them all. We rowed to the limb as fast as we could ,afraid our prize catch would get away.
When I pulled the line up thier was the bigest bevaer you ever saw hooked in the tail.
We carried a toe sack to put the catfish we caught in. I got the bright Idea to put the beaver in the sack and take it home, the guy I was fishing with took his knife and cut the line.
He was probably a lot smarter than me.

Did you ever see a beavers teeth up close and personal. No problem seeing how they cut down trees. that Beaver didnt mind showing us his dental work. I dont think he thought much of our style of fishing.

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

This is my story when I was about 10.
My parents where down on there luck and no home with 2 kids. A couple that said they had some land and old house in northen Ontario Canada and said we could live with his family. We go there by train and dad helped him fix things
. It was not much of a place. At first my Mother walked over a mile to wash our cloths in the lake.At first I had a stick and line with hook.
Over a year went by. Working hard my Dad saved a bit of money. They buy us metal poles and real
and take us fishing in some ones row boat ( it was made of wood). We are in the lilypads with worms on our hooks. Dads rowing Moms by his side. My bother on one side of the boat I'm on the other. Now we would catch sunfish..big maybe 2 lbs..that's the truth.Well my bobber goes under and I real the fish in than my metal pole bends almost to the water...my Mothers yelling let go we are going to drowned ( she can not swim) I'm hanging on with all my life, the boat is tipping on it's side to where a bit of water is comming in the boat. The line breaks at least thats what I thought. The boat.is rocking back and forth. My line is in and there is part of a head of a big sunfish as large as mans hand. A great northan Pike had hit it. I once seen one on that lake jump out of the water as big as a 6 ft man. This is all true and I was told next time, let go of the pole.
We boys had great parents for which I'm greatfull.
I have tears in my eyes got to stop this story now!

Michael

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

JB, thats a Rockwell moment! You painted a perfect picture!

The biggest ones, are the ones you never see.

I've lost what had to be at least a 5lb smallie. Was pulling to the bottom the whole time. Ten minutes, or at least it seemed, and had her under the boat, still fighting like no tomarrow. And then she was gone. Bring my line up, and half the spinner was still there. Pulled the wire free!

Have had a number of times, where I have hooked into something big, on the river, just heads out like you're not even hooked. Can't turn their head. Snap. I always want to believe it was a muskie, but I'm sure a couple were huge snagged carp.

My best one, was ice fishing Oneida Lake with my dad. I was in my early teens. Back then, they allowed 10 tip-ups each, and you can leave them in overnight. Fishing about a mile out from the east end of the lake. About 25' of water. In those days, people even drove their cars on the ice. After getting back out on a Sunday AM, we started to check our tip-ups, and rebait. I of course go to flags first. My first flag, I could barely pull the tip-up out of the hole. The line was out at an angle and very taught. We used this very heavy green dacron, probably 100lb test, 50lb mono leader. My dad didn't fool around with finesse stuff! Anyway, my dad comes over, and we both pull on the line, just trying to get the line clear of the snag. Finally it breaks free. But there is still a very heavy weight on it, like we are bringing up a waterlogged fence post or an anchor. We get it all the way up to the hole, and out. Caught my first ice chisel! The fish had wrapped the line around the pipe, numerous times, and then bent the hook straight out. I still have that ice chisel, (used it twice this year) but always wish I had the fish, instead!

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

Most of the stories I know are tall, but this one is true. A distant older cousin of mine, many many years ago, was bitten by a bass. If you think our elders were squeaky clean puritans, think again: he and several others of this respectable bunch of girls and boys were skinny dipping in front of the old cottages at this little lake in Michigan--at night! A bass grabbed his You-Know-What and gave it a good yank. We know it wasn't a pike or bowfin because he didn't lose it. And no to you smarty pants, it wasn't one of the girls. (He surely must have wished.) But nobody skinny dips at night there much any more. We warn the upcoming generations.

-------------------
"You can't see under the water until you know what's there."

Re: YOUR STORY>>>The one that got away

It was two years ago I was fishing a night walleye tournament at Lake Wallenpaupack when I began drowning inside from all the coffee I drank.

I had a jig tipped with a minnow and set my rod in a holder while the line dangled about 5-6 feet deep in the water. I began taking care of my prevailing bodily demands when halfway through the procedure, my rod doubled over and started making it's way out of the holder. By the time I got things under control enough to grab the rod, I was only able to feel what was presumably a large fish spit the bait out. From now on, I always make sure at least one hand is ready to take control of my rod.
