Re: Your Opinion on Oil Injection

I'm confused, I thought we were talking about the newer oil injection system?? If it's the old AutoBlend, I don't thnk anyone will argue about that system failing. But if you're talking about the newer oil injection system, with the pump directly above the fuel pump, it's a different story. The length of the fuel line doesn't come into play. And it's a very dependable system. My Merc 150 XR6 works great, and has been since 1992.

The oil system are mostly all a matter of opinion and a matter of what you feel good with. I ran an AutoBlend system for years on a 115 inline 6 Mariner, never had a problem....the tank starting leaking so I removed the system and started premixing.

I now have the 1992 Merc 150 with the oil injection pump. It's working as well too, and I'll keep on using it until it gives problems. (I know what you're thinking, when it gives problems it's too late). Well, ANYTHING man made WILL fail eventually. Cound be a connecting rod, piston, oil pump, main bearing.....you know??? So no use in arguing, if one feels the pump is okay then fine, if another wants to remove it and premix, fine. You know opinions are like a***** we all have one, removing or not removing the oil system is just that opinion. The oringnal post asked for opinions, not an all out argument.

But they WILL FAIL...eventually
Let us not forget our friend Murphy.

Jeez, there's very little in this world - animal, vegetable, or man-made - that won't fail EVENTUALLY. I bet the color yellow makes you sad ... ;)

The only safe way out is to forget the gasoline engine altogether and use oars.

Oh wait, eventually you'll fail.:D

Which brings me to my main reasoning. The odds of my memory failing are way shorter than the odds of the VRO failing.

I have a vivid memory of an old man weeping on the boat landing at Fish lake. He had forgotten the oil in the fuel while playing with an old green skin Mercury 5 horse.

Re: Your Opinion on Oil Injection

I always wondered about lag time before oil mix switched from 100:1 to 50:1. Never sweated it. Just wondered. I also considered the time the premix sits in the carb bowls. Shouldn't that also be added?

I had always thought that if I idled for a period (like say out of the marina toward open water) that I'd be punching the throttle at 100:1 and it would be a gradual increase to 50:1 by the time I planed. For this reason I thought that first cold acceleration was the toughest on the motor from a wear and tear aspect.

What kind of oil pump gear does an '88 100 hp 4cyl 2+2 motor have? Is it the cheap plastic kind? Did Merc switch over to a metal gear at some point? Why didn't they design the pump so that you only need to unbolt and pull it out, gear and all?

Never has gone ta metal. Tha only reason tha material changed at all is due to tha fact of HEAT. When ya overheat an older gear it will be prone ta fail down tha road. Most folks don't realize this and end up blaming tha gear when in fact it was done in a previous over heat problem. Sometimes something else in tha motor breaks with pieces gettin' in tha gear and chewin' it up makin' tha gear tha culprit. Tha newer material is a lot more resistant ta heat. As long as there is proper maintance, no heat, and not twistin' tha thing 6800 or more its a very dependable system. This is on tha '84 up production V6 Merc/Mariners oil injection.
Far as 100 ta 1 then wfo, there is no problem with any delay.

Tha Autoblend is a different story.......JMO

Re: Your Opinion on Oil Injection

I am debating this right now (on my 1997 175HP unit), especially after seeing how many little lines go all over the place on the motor (just took it all apart today). My marine mechanic friend says the modern systems are for the most part reliable, but sometimes the plastic gear on the crank can strip out.

What needs to be done to remove the system? I removed it on a Yamaha jet boat I had with a couple block-off plates and caps.
