I'm considering purchasing a 1994 23' Renken Seamaster stern drive. From the pictures, the engine cover says V? 5.0 in red. The specs say it's a Yamaha. Power Steering. Comes with trailer. Two large wells that run the length of the deck on each side of the fuel tank. Two smaller wells under each chair. The Cuddy has I think 4 windows, fridge, stove, and a porta poti. To my knowledge, the engines work nice.

What should a setup like this run? What are the pros and cons for the rig/manufacture?

The boat will intended to be used for a variety of family activities (sandbars, 10-15 miles out for fishing, cruising and fishing the intercoastal, and intercoastal restaurant stops.

Thanks.

Run away as fast as you can....while the engine is a run of the mill 5 liter GM product, Yamaha decided to screw all their I/O customers years back by pulling out of that market.
There are virtually NO parts available....ok, a few here and there, but you will pay dearly for them. Have fun finding someone to work on the drive, too.

Anyone know the specs of this engine? Specifically the weight.

If the engine runs fine, has good compressions, I'll most likely purchase it then begin to Marinize an auto engine for the future.

What on earth does the weight of a small block Chevy (which it what's in it now) have to do w/ anything?

You are missing the whole point....it is a marinized auto engine in it now.
THAT is not the problem, even if it was blown up.
The problem is the Yamaha outdrive.....you are SOL on that beast.

Anyone pondering purchasing a Yamaha I/O boat needs to take a reality pill.

What does it take to replace the "outdrive?"

What would be a direct bolt on replacement?

If there isn't a drect bolt on replacement, what modifications would need to be done?

Thank you for clarifying the real problem.

Sincerely

Actually there is plenty of parts available still from Yamaha and they have not abandoned the unit. The unit is still built overseas. We do quite a mail order business on the parts and ship daily. What has happened is no one wants to mess with them anymore and won't take the time to order the parts. Any Yamaha dealer can get just about any part needed if they want to. If the parts isn't available in the Kenasaw Ga warehouse, we get them direct from Japan and usually just as fast. Don't be afraid of the boat just because its powered by Yamaha. Do the usually checks like you would for any other engine and if it checks out, go for it. You can usually get better deals on these boats due to everyone believing they can't be repaired or get parts for.
