So I've been using cherry logs in my smoker and I finally burned the last of them. I was wondering where my next hookup would come from when I saw an ad on CL for some pecan. The gentleman just wanted it out of his back yard. I went over there this afternoon and backed right up to it. I got it cut up and loaded and even had time to visit with him and his neighbor before leaving. They were a hoot. Reminded me of the two old guys in the balcony on The Muppet Show. I'm in the hamfat now! Giddyup.:D

Possibly, which is fine since I'm nuts according to the admiral. The previous owners of my house left behind a cheapie big box store horizontal smoker/grill with offset firebox. Since it was a freebie I decided to experiment. I drilled a little hole in the bottom of the fire box and bolted a propane burner to it. I put some heavy duty mesh over the burner and laid a heavy duty sheet pan on the mesh. To smoke I put the meat in the grill section, light the burner, and lay a wet log on the sheet pan. The log will usually smolder and smoke for four to six hours before it ignites and I have to replace it. Works pretty well considering I have a grand total of $30 invested in it. It's no Ribasauras Rex though!;)

Sounds like a good setup. Personally, I like using the propane to fire the wood chips too because the heat is more controllable.

I got this cheap little guy from Agri Supply for $100 bucks. Not big by any means, but you can probably do a couple of 10 lb roasts on it.

Plus it looks like Sputnik!

I'll give it a shot if I can find one. They've been kind of scarce since that commercial.

Never tried pecan- let us know how it works out in the smoker. I've smoked with cherry and I have a lot of applewood from a tree on our property that fell down in a storm- done a lot of smoking with the apple.

We just had a mulberry tree cut down last fall. Anyone know if mulberry is any good for smoking?

Incoop, try splashing some dark rum on the dry split side of you pecan logs a few hours before the water soak.Im always experimenting w different liquids to ad more flavor to the wood or wood chips.Apple juice, dark beers, wine, etc.Soaked rosemary has a great flavor also on the smoker.Sometimes I put halves of onion right on the edge of the coals too.For beef, try large strips(cut w a strong knife) or small cut pieces of grapevine soaked in red wine, its very good.Ive seen an oldtimer who soaks his oak/hickory logs in a thin vinegar based bbq sauce similar to the sauce he bastes his pork and chicken with also.

Thanks mommicked. Those are some neat techinques. I'll begin trying them as time allows. That's what makes it fun.
