Ok guys, You have all been incredibly helpful in the past few weeks and I want to thank you for that. Here's another one for you.

1963 Johnson 40HP. A little hard to start I have to turn the choke on, try to start it, it will catch for 1 sec, then die. I then have to turn the choke off and it will start fine. The motor will never run in "the automatic" setting on the carb. Also when the motor is running it will loose power for a minute or two then pick back up. It looses enough power to drop the crusing speed by approx. 10MPH.

I have replace the fuel filter this week. The original was dry and brittle. Ran it under the faucet and no watter could pass through. I haven't brought the motor to the lake to test it after replacing the filter yet. What else should I try? I was thinking about trying to rebuild the carb. Or at least clean it. I have never done it before. Any reccomendations?

What you describe here "(A little hard to start I have to turn the choke on, try to start it, it will catch for 1 sec, then die. I then have to turn the choke off and it will start fine.)"...This is normal starting procedure.

The RPMs falling off are not normal, and you are on-track with the problem (I.E., filters, fuel starvation). So far, I would've done the same thing. Also, I would run a compression test. Without good compresson, you won't get the right amount of fuel to the carb.
If the compression is up to spec, get a rebuild kit for the fuel pump, and check all fittings in the fuel line for air leaks.
But like I said, so far, so good.

Hey, John. 12Footer is right on what I would have recommended. Consider this a second opinion.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)
