Look at pages 4B-31 and 32 of the manual, and let me know what you find.

Oh, I didn't mean that as sarcasm, I meant it in all sincerity (laughing at my own stupid mistake). I impatiently scanned through the manual and overlooked that section, which CLEARLY answers my question.

You've been tough on me since day one, but you've always been right. I really meant the thanks!

I'm no tougher on you than I am on anyone else. May sound like it at times, probably because I don't use a lot of the politically correct warm and fuzzy feeling words people want to hear.

I respect that about you... wouldn't expect it any other way! In fact, if you started beating around the bush, I'd wonder who hacked your account.

Re: Yellow "gunk" in engine compartment... smells like gear oil

Well, I was up late last night hoping to finish this project. I was so excited that everything was back together, when I learned that now it won't shift out of forward. I can pull back on the shift lever maybe a half inch then it catches and I don't think I could pry it back with a 2X4. .....so, now I guess it's back to the manual to make sure I understand what to do and then back off with the outdrive to see what I didn't line up or attach correctly.

You may have "mis-splined" the shift shaft...fairly common...not a fatal mistake, just ensure it's EXACTLY (there's literally no room for error) in line. Just don't start forcing things...If it was working well before the teardown, it should feel the same after.

Put it all back together and enjoy!

+1 on the mis-splined theory.... When you take the drive off (if you havent already)...dont just tear things apart until you try rotating the intermediate shift shaft to see if this is indeed the case (people loose valuable troubleshooting info just digging into things). If you can rotate the intermediate shift shaft clockwise past 12 oclock, it is mis-splined (Of course, you understand the 10, 11, 12 oclock positions of the shift shaft...). Let us know how/when you get it figured out.

Re: Yellow "gunk" in engine compartment... smells like gear oil

Thanks so much for the responses! I've had a busy weekend that has kept me away from my boat :blue:, but I'm back on it today.

Assuming I understand what you guys are telling me (please forgive me, as I am completely "green" here), I think I may know what I did wrong. When putting the lower back on, after installing the new sea pump, I was having a bit of trouble getting the two pieces to go back completely together. At first I thought that the shaft needed to turn a bit to align the splines, but after fighting with it for a bit, I found that I was wrong... my water tube wasn't aligned correctly and was causing the trouble. Before identifying the real problem, I "fiddled" with the foot on top of the shift shaft (i think the manual calls it the shift shaft coupler) quite a bit trying to get the prop to engage the shaft so I could turn it. I even lifted up and turned it a few times so I'm certain it is not "splined" the same as it was when it came off. :der: I know, newbies, right?
So, if I understand the previous two posts correctly, my "fiddling" with stuff I shouldn't caused this problem. Am I right?
... and the big question... How the heck do I find the right "splinal alignment" (for lack of a better term)????????????

Pull the drive, turn the shift shaft in the drive Clockwise while turning the prop counter clockwise (with one finger) until you feel the drive go into gear and the prop stops turning easily. You are now in forward gear, and the shift shaft should be pointing straight forward.
If it's not, you have to raise the upper up and turn adjust as needed.

Re: Yellow "gunk" in engine compartment... smells like gear oil

Just as you guys said, I ended up putting the lower back on with the shift shaft one spline clockwise of where it was supposed to be. I corrected that, put it all back together, and now everything works fine (... on the trailer, that is. I hope to put it back in the water next week). Torquing the hinge pins back down has allowed me to adjust my trim gauge to where it is working right now, and my trim switch is actually working now (It hasn't worked since I got the boat (I'm now assuming due to something being out of adjustment with the trim limiter). I've been having to carefully use the tilt switch for everything). It's a scary thought, how loose those things were. I wonder if the last person to put them in didn't have the special tool, and tried to "good-ole-boy" rig it up, hmmm. Oh well, it doesn't matter now, as it's all fixed up now.

I'd still be scratching my head with a derr:der: look on my face without you guys. Thanks so much for your help, everyone!... and a special thanks to Don S.!!
