year of my merc 40???

I need help finding out the year of my mercury 40. the serial number is 5174221. I also need a prop and need advice on what pitch to look for. I am using this motor on a 16ft aluminum traveler. thanks for any help

The motor is a 1979.

How or where do you find this information? I have a 40 hp Merc with a simalar SN starting with 45, can't remember the rest of it off hand.

Boyd,<br /><br />That is my brother that started this post. On my 1972 Merc Inline 6 115 the serial number is on the plate that is right on the transom.<br />Post again if you still can't find it and I will ask him where his is.<br />Is this what you are asking about?<br /><br />Bill

No, I have been looking for a referance for the S/N to identify the year model of the motor. I found it from an earlier post though. Thanks.<br />Mine is a 77 from the documentation that I found.
