Hey I just got a free boat. The motor is a Johnson seahorse and it says 70 on the back which I assume means the hp. The motor will start but not run at all after that. Looking for a manual or any info to help me out. The guy said it was a 70's motor but i really don't know for sure or how to find out. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Year of motor?

Alright hopefully the numbers i found mean something. The 3 x 1 tag is missing. I found 3 different nickel size areas that had numbers. The one which is on the top of the engine block says 389482 pph, that one is on a shiny piece of metal. the other on top was stamped into it and it is 389235 d2. The last number i found was on a solonoid type of device and it said 01900-05-m but am assuming that is just the part number for that part. If it helps the motor is white and is a 3 cylinder. Any clues to what year the motor is would be helpful. Thanks

Re: Year of motor?

upon further inspection it looks like it does have a plate on the leg however it seems like it has been painted over.. i had a quick look this morning before work and make out the following:

J70TL03A

Now using the pdf that was posted earlier it looks like
J= Johnson
70 = HP
T = Trim and Tilt / Electric Start
L = 20" Long

here is where im confused 03 -?? its not the introduces format?
I wont be able to get a good look until i can peel the paint off later tonight but im 90% sure that is the correct code..
Thanks
Aaron
