I have a Mercury 5hp 2-stroke, serial no OD988694, model 394, Japan made
Supposed to be 2005, but can't locate the serial no on any of the ID websites to confirm, and one shop said 1996.
Thanks for the replies - I am still confused (!) as the Marineshoppen site gives the serial range: " 5 (Japan) 1-cyl 0D987474 0T999999" for all years from 1996 to 2004. Is there any way of distinguishing the particular year? The only other number on the sticker is "394" .
The Maxrules site does not go past 1996, and gives the same serial range for both 4hp & 5hp motors!
Probably should have mentioned that I am in Australia so that might also have some bearing on the year/serial mix.

Rob, Have some faith in the three of us + your "one shop", Your engine serial number (OD988694) is a 1996 MERCURY TMC NA 5 MH, Model number 1005201SK.
The engine manufacture date was back on 06/26/1995 and because it was made after the end of may, Merc considers this to be a 1996 engine.
Your service manaul for this engine is 90-17308R02 - 4/5/102CC SAILPOWER
Also you could try googling the engine model number (1005201SK) to help you find a little bit more information about your engine and to help find parts for your engine if needed.
