yamaha won't shift or start after prop ding

I just hit a rock with my brand new yamaha 90hp. I didn't hit it all that hard, and dinged up the prop only a little bit. It did kill the engine though. Now it won't start or shift out of gear.
When I try to start it, it sounds like it is trying to start in gear.
I cannot manually turn the propeller.
Anybody had something like this happen before? Is this going to be expensive?

Try to take the shifter cable off and see if it will shift into neutral by hand. If it shifts normally then the cable may be stretched or broken and you may be able to readjust the shifter linkage. If not it time to drop the lower unit and see what kind of damage was done, and yes it could be expensive depending on what you find.

I followed the above and soon discovered a sheered shaft. I took it to my local dealer, and for just over $600 I"m back in the water. Even they were suprised at how little prop damage translated into a sheered shaft.

Was this an aluminum or stainless prop? I would have thought either would have spun on the hub first!

which shaft broke on your lower unit? somehow my drive shaft broke/sheared off and i have dropped the lower unit. i did not hit anything however 2 weeks ago i got line caught up in prop and easily removed. i now have to remove the rest of the lower unit, prop and gears and look at that to see what i need to do to repair it. Any hints? what is left by the water pump area going to the prop, will not turn the prop. gotta check it out. fairly certain have to remove prop and everything.. just wondering for imput.. first time so we shall see
