Re: Yamaha v/s Mercury?

You won't care what country it was made, or who's job made it when it leaves you stranded 100 miles offshore in a squall.

I love American....that's why I live here. But we're a throw-away society and some of the products we produce are just that. Some people need to get over it. Without the over-seas competition, we'd still be driving Pinto's and Vega's. We'd be absent of many outboard technologies.

Buy something proven, tried, true, and tested. Then hope for good luck.

Who really makes a US made outboard? Not Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Tohotsu, Nissan, or Yanmar. Bombardier (Evenrude/Johnson) is now Canadian. Merc is using Japanese power heads. Whats left? :)

Forktail, that makes more sense than anything I've heard here. Hey Flatsman, I may not know alot about outboards yet, but I have been inside alot of car and truck engines and I know it's not impossible, BUT it is VERY VERY unlikley tht you got that many miles out of ANY gasoline engine!!Not if you've been pulling a boat all that time!!I know Fords are about the toughest truck I've ever seen, but not that tough. C'mon now tell the truth!!

I'm sorry to all the rest of you guys for gettin' to far off the subject. Sometimes I get carried away.I'll try to restrain myself!I've owned a boat for 3 years now and I'm still trying to learn.

catdoggin: That is the truth, 650,000 miles on a 1984 Ford 302 cid V-8. Believe it or not, I was there.

Craig

It was the "Never touched it" part that makes me question the 650,000 miles, not to mention this would be an uncommon 36,000 miles per year of use. Most over-the-road diesels can't do that. ??

Yeah, "Never been touched" is what made me question that too.Having that many miles would wear the timing chain and gears. The valves would need adjusting, and the rings would wear even with the best oil!! and the list could go on and on! If you did, you need to contact the Ford Co. I bet they would like to know 'bout that one! If you drive that much, when do you find time to use your boat or get on the net?

Re: Yamaha v/s Mercury?

For what it's worth, i owned a 96 Mariner 3cyl 75 HP, a great looking motor, ran strong yet always ran very rough at low speed and idle. I spoke to two other owners of similar motors and all complained of the same rough running at low speed. I was told that a 70 HP Yamaha 3cyl idles very smoothly, much better than merc, of course at the time i did'nt believe it. I was advised at the time, that the 3 cylinder motors were difficult to get to idle smooth because of the odd number of cylinders, hence a 4 cylinder merc would run much smoother than the 3 cyl.
I now own a 97 Yamaha 70Hp 3 cylinder and the difference is chalk and cheese, the yammy is smooth all the way .
Also pre 1990 mercs in salt water did'nt seem to withstand the corrosion very well, whilst the metal in the newer mercs seems a lot better. I would'nt completely reject a late model merc, but i would prefer a yamaha first.

I owned a smooth as glass 3 cylinder 1986 yamaha 90 Hp but on my new boat I wanted an American motor. The 2002 Mercury 90 HP was beautiful...I sent it back after 3 trips and have a yamaha because the Merc was about to tear itself off my transom.. The dealer even warned me before we mounted the Merc about the shaking and I was too dumb to listen. The whole thind just depresses me that we let the Japs beat us again
