Yamaha stern drive shift problem

90 Yamaha stern drive won't shift back to neutral from drive if engine is running. Any suggestions?

If its not trying to stall the engine when you do this then the shift switch isn't working. Shift switch located where the two shift cables come together. Check to see if both wires are connected

Thanks Capt Ken. It actually was stalling my motor when i tried shifting. I unhooked a sensor to see if that was the problem. Never would have guessed that would have kept it from shifting.
