Yamaha Prime start lever position

I have been reading posts on the Yamaha Prime start switch and everyone references 3 positions. "Open" "Normal" and "Closed" I have a 50hp 2004 yamaha 2 stroke on my pontoon boat and my Prime starts switch only shows "OPen" and "Closed" Here is a picture of the switch. Is this in the correct position??
Thanks
Bill in Clermont Fl.

Re: Yamaha Prime start lever position

That prime start lever is a bit confusing to me also, but I've never had to use mine since my prime start has always worked fine. I went and checked the prime start lever on my 90HP Yamaha and to put it as simple as I know how, the red lever is in the most counter-clockwise position where it stops on a pin, that must be the normal position, with the open and closed positions being by turning the lever clockwise. Hope this helps!

Looking at your photograph, it looks like you need to turn your lever one more click counterclockwise until it stops on that pin. I just don't think this lever is a very good design, at least not to me. Good Luck!

The carb silencer(cover) should have a diagram on it showing all 3 positions. full counterclockwise should be correct for normal like Robert said, but it looks like yours is in the closed position in the pic

Re: Yamaha Prime start lever position

This all started with a low speed miss, and a hesitation every once in a while on acceleration so I rebuilt all 3 carbs and all of a sudden I had a "spit" and it would spit and quit. I resealed carbs to manifold but spit still persisted. I moved the "Red" lever to a position about 1/8 inch from full counter clockwise and spit went away. There is a small indent where I put It. I have the manual but it never said anything about where it should be placed. I will check the carb cover tomorrow in the daylight as I never thought to look there because it was removed while all this was going on.
Thanks for all you help. When I put boat back in water I will get a better chance to see how it performs.

Make sure you do the sync and link like the manual calls for anytime after reinstalling the carbs

Re: Yamaha Prime start lever position

Thanks I did it just as stated in manual. Boat ran great with lever in the
"OPen" position, started right up ran like a top. So I left it open, I dont know if leaving in open position will affect gas consumption, any thoughts??

Re: Yamaha Prime start lever position

If it will not run properly in the normal position the carbs need to be pulled and cleaned. Some thing is plugged up.
If I turn mine to open it will not even run because there is too much fuel hitting the cylinders from the emergency circuit and from the regular carb circuits.
