Yamaha Outboard Power Head Failure

Can an outboard's power head fail as the result of striking a submerged object while underway? 1995/Yamaha/200 TXRR? The mechanic is not sure why the power head failed after he replaced the entire lower unit. The Forums input is muchly appreciated.

This is a friends boat. He said he hit a submerged log. Not sure how fast he was going - I will get back with you with that information. Thanks for you input.

What kind of power head failure?
I could see how a crankshaft/flywheel problem could arise from a hard strike, but not a piston. Just an opinion

I would think the prop would spin before the power head would fail. My opinion!!
