Yamaha Lowerunit compatability

I have a good running 2 stroke 1999 Yamaha 40hp OB that the lower has went out in.
I have just been told by a guy at the yamaha shop that all 2S 40-50hp lower units are compatable with each other as long as they are 2S. I have found several Complete OBs and good lowers for cheap, but I have been told by a few that some models will not work on my 99 due to changes throughout the years. Now I am confused. If any yr model will work than I'm in good shape because I know where a cheap one is sitting. If not I will have to continue my search...
Any help or insight on this topic would be very helpful.

Re: Yamaha Lowerunit compatability

If it is truly a 1999 ( you failed to post your model #) a 1995 to 1999 take the same part #.

If it was made in 1999 then it is a good chance it is a 2000

strange 63D-45300-11-4D is listed as 1998 to 2000

63D-45300-10-4D is listed as 1995 to 1999

Never mind, it all depends on what model # you have and there are many different ones for each year
Look up your part # and then compare to the others

Re: Yamaha Lowerunit compatability

It's my understanding that anything 40-50hp 1995-present 2-stroke will bolt up but keep in mind over the years things may have changed including prop/shift splines and internal gear ratios. They are probably all the same except for maybe gear ratios but my knowledge is based on jet unit compatibility which doesn't take these factors into consideration.
