Re: Yamaha Jet Boat

The only thing that shocks me is how offended people get when you point out anything about their boats that might be on the 'cons' side of any review list anywhere.

Healthy discussion fleshes out all sorts of thing.
Well it's not "my boat" anymore, and keep in mind I still sold it to get the one or two things the prop did better. ;)

On lake anna it's just a floating boat show, it was kinda like showing up to prom in an old Pinto or something haha. Okay I kid, it wasn't that bad - but having two two-stroke engines with 4 mikuni carburetors EACH was slightly unnerving reliability-wise (on the other hand, those things never let me down! Smoke and all! haha) plus the random "YOUR BOAT IS SMOKING!" comments.

PS I saw your boat in another thread - maybe towing or something? I forget but I remembered seeing the BRX. That thing is sweet, my friends Checkmate (ZT230BR) is one of the main reasons I sold the Yamaha for an I/O configuration. Awesome style, great stance, sounded incredible, and offered better deep-water performance (these are all weak-points of the yamaha, though not really directly due to the drive system) I opted for the Donzi because I found one for less than half of its' value due to dead engine. I plan on flipping it after new engine, and getting something newer.

My friends checkmate and my (then) yamaha, first time I had it out! I was steering/filming and couldn't reach both throttles till the last few seconds, you can faintly hear them rev up to 7k and he stopped gaining - that thing ran pretty good considering all the positives it carried with it. Unfortunately the new yamaha 4-stroke boats don't focus on speed really - I don't think they ever matched the 90s-early 00s 2 stroke LS/LS 2000 / AR / XR1800s for speed, even the badass 210SS' with the High Output engines.

Re: Yamaha Jet Boat

if you notice, most of the anti-jet opinions come from people that have never owned them. They talked to people, and assume they are now experts in the field. They probably have never ridden in a jet boat, let alone drove one at any time.

At least if I were a mod, I'd be deleting anyone's post that is adding 2nd or 3rd hand knowledge. The op asked a question, if you have no direct knowledge and only going on hearsay, you have no business posting.

I disagree. Opposing opinions help to counter any bias.

As long as one doesn't hurl outright insults, it's healthy discussion that gets down to something more objective.

This iboats forum is weird when it comes to message boards the world over. It seeks to find one or two nice and wholesome answers, but the final, most-objective answer is often hard to reach, because people can't separate healthy discussion from feeling insulted.

I like this thread. By challenging the things I have read and felt myself (drivers and myself who didn't understand how to leverage jet boat handling), others have made me think, "Well, maybe no one I was ever with ever actually leveraged the jet engines thrust at low speed, etc".

And here we are, somehow more enlightened.

Happy Boating. :)

I only get offended when people pass along misinformation or mistakenly categorize a characteristic as a "con" when the reality is that it is a "pro". I believe the older jet boats (think tahiti's etc) had very real handling issues. Today's jets are much more advanced. Torched, Bubba, and Smokingwater have all concurred that modern jets will out maneuver any other boat at slow speeds.

I agree with your last post. Threads like these where healthy discussions take place can be extremely educational. As long as it remains a respectful dialogue. I have learned much from these forums and have had my opinion changed on several topics.

I have a 2007 210 four winns, which i like. I have a friend with a 2008 Yamaha 230 and have gone out with him. Its a great boat and i would love to have one. They work well on the river, whereas i have to watch much closer than him. I dont think you can go wrong with the newer Yamahas if that is what you choose.

Re: Yamaha Jet Boat

I just bought a 2003 Chaparral 180SS. I was looking for a light boat that would pull water toys but wouldn't burden my 2800lb boat lift. I seriously considered a 2008 Seadoo Challenger. I was concerned about the low speed maneuverability until I drove it. The boat dealer showed me a few tricks and after 10 minutes I could move that boat wherever/however I wanted. I ended up buying the Chap because it felt much more substantial and heavier in the water. The sound of the chap was better. The Seadoo sounded like a weedeater, but it was a great boat that I would have enjoyed. I did a lot of rearch and I think the Yamaha is a better boat, although I've never driven or ridden in one. If the new Yamaha AR180 was 4 years older and $10k cheaper, I might have gone in that direction.
