I have a yamaha 2002 60hp with the electro thermal valve. it seems to work on the bench but can not figure out why it wont start the motor when activated. In the test it taks several minutes for it the be fully extended. Can anyone explain why it doesnt work instantly? If i use the emergency red lever it starts right up.

Re: Yamaha hard starting when cold

check your carbs.
emergency mode is actually manual enrichment and would be used for a manual cold start or if the primer failed.
running only with the emergency on indicates a restriction in the pilot fuel circuit.

physically remove the main jet, pilot fuel jet and the emulsion tube and carefully clean them.
also make sure the transfer passage between the main well and the pilot fuel orifice is clear.
dont forget the rubber pilot fuel jet plugs.
