I will add one more lunatic event involving water skipping and then hang this up. Given enough adjult beverages, someone will eventually jump on a sled and make it across open water. Well, a couple more beverages and someone says, hey -- I'll bet two of us can make it across. Then three will try. On the last try, one of the three will reach around and spank the kill switch. Everybody gets a bath whether they want it or not.

getting back to your question.
is yamaha going out. maybe in the ski market, maybe in th car market, but the water craft ,marine and cycle market you will find they dominate.
no yamaha holds no speed records for a factory dominated field.
however they hold reliability rates the rest dream of.
I am in a very unique position that very few techs ever see.
I been there, done that, with almost every marine manufacturer you can name.
I have done this gig a very long time, made apoint to befreind my competition.
its paid off in the long run.
dont go snow blind
I have worked for OMC dealers, merc, suzuki, marinervolvo, tohatsu, yamaha and a few more.
its all tghe same only the names change.
get a firm grip on how the designe works, how the fuel control works and how electrciity works and you can name your price anywhere.
the mechanicals really have not changed much in 50-60 years. just the controls.
and that is all electrinic.
I pointed out a flaw in a yamaha factory vidio at todays seminar that BOTH tech reps missed, a fatal flaw if your not careful
so keep plugging, no yamaha outbaord aint going away and everyday do your best but the next day do better.
and look for my picture in the 2007 marine tech guide, if I can do it anyone reading this can.

Thanks rodbolt. I like doing this even though at this time im currently doing more rigging than service work but I enjoy both. Im a second gen tech as my dad does the same thing but I originally started off wanting to be and Auto Tech but kinda learned that up in the snowbelt here rust wouldn't be so fun so here I am. Im only 22 so ive got much to learn but its been fun. So your gonna be in the 07 tech guide ehh? How did you manage that?

Re: Yamaha going the way of OMC?

According to some of the rags I read, next year is predicted....predicted only.....to be a lean year for the boating industry......no, I don't know where they get their figures or how they come to these conclusions. Brunswick has already said they will close two plants...really didn't say "what" plants..... and are cutting over 600 jobs.

The boat/motor industry and all that goes with it has highs and lows as some other sport/recreational industries do. Maybe we are seeing one of those lows.

Brunswick is closing plants, but I'm not sure they're Mercury plants. Could be cutting back on bowling shoes or pool tables.

BoatGuy, I'm betting we were at the same seminar in Madison last year. Man they put out a good bunch of food for lunch! I live 1/2 hour from Madison, but an hour away from where it was on the far side of town. But the place I worked at then closed and the one I work at now doesn't sell Yamaha, so I'll miss this year's. :(

I agree Willy. I'd be really surprised if it were Merc plants. Brunswick is so diversified, hard to tell what there going to close.
