My 1997 Yamaha 225 OX66 has a threaded hose (very short) under the engine for fresh water just like all Yamaha outboards. My boat and engine stay in the water all season. Can I use this fresh water intake to rinse out my engine while the engine is down and the lower unit is still submerged? I always assumed that the water pick ups on the lower unit bullet will overtake any fresh water intake.

That backflushing system is designed to flush the engine with hose pressure, you should not be using that while running the engine.

There is no reason to do it with your engine down, since this is only for backflushing on hose pressure, you don't run the engine with this, either in the water or out. Just lift the engine up, hook the hose up, turn the hose on, and let it back flush the engine for like 5 minutes or so.

If your boat is ever out of the water and you want to run it, use earmuffs on the lower unit to run it, don't use the backflusher. The backflusher will not provide enough water to the water pump and it will burn up while you are running it out of the water.
