We took the lower unit off. Impeller replaced last year. Impeller and all gaskets looked good. Poured water down the hole where the impeller was and water ran out the side vents. I suspect there is a blockage above the lower unit but not sure what the next step is. We got a lower unit kit and installed it. Georgia here. Boat is always in the water and no trailer. Hard to take it to a mechanic.

Somethings missing. Are you saying the boat is in the water and there is no water coming from the pisser with the motor running?

The boat is in the water. only smoke comes out the pee hole. no water
that did not answer my question, does the motor overheat if it is kept running for some length of time?

but smoke should not be coming out of the place water should be coming out of.
is that smoke coming out right after startup of the motor?
or is it steam you are seeing after the motor has heated up?

blown head gasket, or corrosion hole in head or exhaust plate would be my guess

Glad it is not my motor. Trying to help a friend. Guess it is time for a new motor. Thank you as always for the help

time to take it apart to see what is wrong and needs to be fixed before throwing it away,
maybe just a head gasket or head, or plate in exhaust
