The Clymer manual is a good reference source and has overhaul, testing, timing, and specs for your engine and others in that range, well worth the money. It will give you more confidence, and with the help of this board you can really do most of the preventive and recurring maintenance yourself.

re the carbs, i have bought a carb cleaner, i will undo the drain screws and squirt cleaner in, then re instate the screw and run the engine up,and spray through the throat as well, i plan to give the engine (outer) a good degreasing today and look at the electrical contacts, so a good afternoons work ahead!

results!
have degreased the engine-sparkles like new.
have tapped float bowl, cleaned carbs and sprayed through throat whilst running, checked all, restarted and bang-forgot to check flush muffs in situ and supplying water - they had slid off with high revs-/vibration-new power head now required.

one day i will get this out on the water.

Re: yamaha 90hp ~1988 3 cyl

since the last 2 emails, i have spoken with my insurance company, and as i am covered for accidental damage, they would like me to fill in a claim form! no garantee at this stage, but it is nice of them to consider it.

You'll be very lucky if your insurance covers your loss. I can only recommend that in future when you work on the motor, get a manual first. My Seloc manual overemphasises the need to check waterflow continiously.

Also, if you expect proper reliable service from your outboard, especially if you want to venture out to sea, good maintanance is essential. Tapping a carb and spraying carbcleaner down the throat in order to "fix" a leaking carb is NOT considered good maintanance.

Removing, cleaning/rebuilding and refitting carburettors are basic maintanance steps on a par with changing spark plugs. Just follow the steps in the manual.

Good luck next time....

largewake,

Don't spray carb. cleaner into the throats of the carbs. while the engine is running. It washes all of the lube oil off of the internal parts.

Just advice for your new powerhead.
