Yamaha 30hp 3cyl shift shaft question

I am the new owner of a 30MSHR 2 stroke. I got it on my boat today and went to add oil to the gearbox and water came out. I drained it and pumped oil into it. After I buttoned it back up I noticed some oil seeping out of the small holes towards the front of the unit.

I took the lower unit off and discovered that when I pump oil into it, oil was coming up around the boot on the shift shaft.

There is a washer on the shift shaft that was riding too high, above a pin.

I think it should have been below it as seen on pictures of pn 6J8-44150-00-00.

I remedied that and put it back together. No more oil seeping out of the holes in the front of the unit.

The boot just kind of pops into a hole. I am worried this is going to simply pop back out when I get into the water and start shifting.

The white bracket 682-44176-00-00 which sits above the boot has a screw in it like it is supposed to attach to something. Maybe it is to keep the boot seated in place? There is nothing do it to screw into, and the bracket is just sitting there doing nothing. It is actually currently screwed into the boot. It just doesn't look right.

Does anyone here have any experience w/ this 1992 2 stroke?

If not, I will throw it back together and test it in the driveway the best I can...

As a note, this is my first time working on a 2 stroke and I don't really know what I'm doing. haha. BUT I do know that the oil should be safely staying in the gearbox, and there shouldn't be water in it.

No first hand experience on that particular model but the parts catalog and the service manual indicate a pan head screw that would appear to hold the shift rod boot in place. Appears that the screw would screw into a threaded hole that is located with a cavity in the lower unit.

No first hand experience on that particular model but the parts catalog and the service manual indicate a pan head screw that would appear to hold the shift rod boot in place. Appears that the screw would screw into a threaded hole that is located within a cavity in the lower unit.

Did you get the shifting cam in all the way? If it does not go down all the way it could be damaged.

Ah. Ok yes this makes sense.
It appears that there is some metal missing where the screw used to screw in.

I have 2 ideas to fix this....

1. I could JB Weld that area, then drill a hole in it for the screw.....
2. I was thinking of drilling a hole in either side of the unit and putting a long threaded bolt in across the retaining bracket to sort of hold it in place.

Maybe drill the hole so as to accept a pop rivet. Then screw the screw into the middle of the rivet.

Fixed!

So like I said, I don't know what I'm doing.. haha

It turns out the white bracket has a bump on either side of it. The metal in the motor wasn't broken. In fact it had indentions. I noticed this when I got the brake cleaner and toothbrush out.

It turns out the white clip fits in there, then the screw makes it expand, keeping it in place.

Mystery solved.

I was thrown off because when I took it apart, the white bracket was just floating around in there and it appeared it was supposed to screw into something. Also, it didn't feel like there was enough room for it to seat, but with some persuasion it did indeed fit.

When I got it back together I didn't have reverse at first, but thankfully just shifting it repeatedly at different angles made everything fall into place. (initially, to install the shift shaft I had the propeller pointing at the ground).

Anyways, I think I got off lucky. There is no more oil leak.
