I've just had a Yamaha service on my 4 year old 25hp outboard and there's no water coming from the tell tale. I have been told that it's o.k to use as the diagnostics haven't picked up anything and everything is running o.k. There is no over heating after a run. This outboard only has 39 hours on it. Is this usual for an outboard's tell tale to fail?

They plug with weeds and dirt.----Clean the hose and fitting.
It was all cleaned on Friday. Water was coming out of the normal places but not the tell tale. It was Yamaha that told me there was no water coming out of the tell tail.

The manufacturer or a Yamaha dealer?

Either way, its odd that the motor would be returned to a customer after service with a known issue. Especially one as simple/important as a tell tale not working

Like post #2 says, often times especially after layup the tell tale port in the cowl gets clogged with debris. Easy fix, again strange that the manufacturer/dealer/service center couldn't figure it out. Highly questionable service

Hi Dubs, it was a dealer. They told me what it could possibly be and after service and diagnostics, it showed there was no problems on the print out sheets. All tubes are clear, water is circulating through the diode and thermostat, but not tell tale. The dealers told me the cost to put right, and what it could be. It would take 4 1/2 hours to strip the motor down. The dealer also told me that it would still be o.k to take out as it is and should the motor over heat, there are sensors that would put it in limp mode. Yes, the motor has been stood up a while and possibly some shale could be blocking it. I'm just wondering when the Yamaha dealer did the service on Friday, did they take all the tubes off from where the water spurts out, especially to the the tell tale outlet. If they did, they would have seen where the blockage was.

Hard to comprehend 4 1/2 hrs to clear a tell tale.-----Sounds like a tall tale to me.

You need a different service provider

Same sad story as with most dealerships. They sell you new, cash the check and sever all ties. Only reason they have service is for warranty because they have to as part of the agreement with manufacturers.

run some weed wacker line up it to see if that clears it ,
if not blow some compressed air up it while it is idling on the muffs or in the water.

small insects like to make nests up inside those small holes

Hi Dubs

The dealer told me that there's nothing in the rubber hoses that leads from the block to the tell tale. They reckon there could be a build up of salt inside the water passage block. To clean the water passage block is the only way to clear the blockage. As I explained earlier, the water is circulating around the engine but not coming out through the tell tale. I've put lines in the rubber hoses and there's no blockage. I think the water passage block has got to be taken apart to clean the debris away that's causing this problem.

why not try the compressed air I mentioned, sure does not cost you much if you have access to a compressor

Was it working before you took it in for routine service?
I had more or less stopped working the last time I took the boat out before the service. I did flush the engine when I brought it home, but nothing was coming from the tell tale.

My neighbour has a compressor, I see if he'll hook it up to give it a good blow. Your comments are valuable to me, Thanks.

I prefer to have the motor running on muffs when I do this hoping for what ever is blocking the flow gets moved around and out the exhaust with the rest of the water flow.

When was the water pump replaced? Sounds like it's time to find another shop.
