Replaced water pump, which works great. Ran engine in barrel. Could shift from forward to neutral then reverse. However neutral is only very small area , forward a very large area, and reverse very small area. How can I get shift lever so neutral is right in center of shift pattern under N and forward only under the F. Can not remember where I had shift lever when I dropped lower unit. Thanks for your help.

Most folks will put their shifter control in neutral before dropping lower unit, then shifting the lower unit while rotating prop shaft by hand to find neutral, then they're both in neutral when you re-install lower unit......

Thanks. So I did not do that. Placed in reverse due to easier access to nuts to uncouple shift shaft. So 1) do I need to separate the lower unit again, or 2) could I just loosen nuts to loosen shaft to get shift lever back in center of neutral area, be sure prop is in neutral, then tighten nuts ? I recall having difficulty accessing nuts to tighten unless shift control was in reverse. First time I have replaced water pump and directions I utilized said little about how to deal with shift shaft, etc.
Thanks for your help.

Just be sure that your control is in neutral AND the lower unit is in neutral when re-assembling......
