Hello:
I have a 2002 217SD with a 225 hp Yamaha 4 stroke. I purchased a external Yamaha 10 micron filter. Where is the best place to mount the filter?
Does the factory now offer a external filter?

If this is the blue filter/water separator, mine is located in the bilge, about 1' from the fuel tank on the port side. You can cut the main fuel line if long enough, and place the filter in-line. All Yamaha 4 strokes come with a fuel filter on the engine from the factory. Usually the dealer who riggs the boat installs the external filter.

I've got a 2010 Hurricane SD2100 (same model as the older 217......they just changed the numbers), and mine is in the same general location as Bear's.......port side in the bilge not too far from the battery.

Not on my boat. This is the bilge access on the 202,

You do on my boat (2100SD = 217SD). The filter is right there when you pull out the storage bin over the battery on the port side at the stern. I'll try to take a photo, but I probably will not get down to the marina before this weekend.

what would be great. Right now my battery switch is there, but I may be able to relocate it.

Here are a couple of photos of where the 10 micron fuel filter is mounted on my boat (2100 SD = 217 SD). Maybe this will give you some ideas:

Boss,

It look like it's not even hooked up? Brass plugs in it??? Are there fuel lines on the other side? I see them now... Strange on the options for different fuel line configurations...

Here is a pic of mine in the bilge.

Funny bear, I was reading this thread and was about to post the same and then read yours.

Ernest, you may have both your feed and return lines hooked up, but they wouldn't pass through the filter (in my opinion) Hard to tell without seeing the other side of the filter. Something to look into.

Yea it looks funny, but you can hook it up either way. Some tight installations don't allow for the lines coming out of both sides according to my dealer (who did the install). There are little arrows on the top that show the direction of the fuel flow. As long as you get the in and out right and plug off the other 2 holes, you are good to go.

Good to know. See us Mercury folks are too simple. Our filters only have one in and one out so we don't have as much of a risk of screwing it up :D

Wish mine was in the access spot yours is. Mine was installed deep in the bilge (about 1-2" beyond my reach) so I have to access it through the access port behind the back seat. PITA to change but I guess for once a year I shouldn't complain for the extra benefit/peace of mind it provides.
