nope it will kill a grinder fast. gets stuck in it and over heats it. if you have a compressor keep it blown out they will last longer

I burned up 3 dewalts this year alone at work (not much fiberglass work either)... I think they have a real problem with those...

Went with Ryobi (el-cheap-o model) here at home which actually gets more use that the ones at work, and it's still alive and grinding long after the dewalts would poop out...

Like Wayne says, keep em' cleaned out with compressed air...

My angle gringer is a Ryobi and it never faltered, And I cut out the floor, six stringers, and ground the entire inner hull surface. I had never even thought about the dust, I just blazed away. It still works just fine. Hmmmm...

Actually, the first one was a cheapie and I didn't expect it to live long. That one died a flaming death with smoke coming out of it :) Second was a Dewalt... That one literally lasted a day. I always clean my tools at the end of the day, that one just didn't like working.

Took it back to Home Despot and got a Ryobi and $40 cash back, so we'll see how that one fairs.. Besides that.. It's not the fiberglass dust, this is a Bayliner.. It's compressed poop! :D :D :p

-R

hmmmm, ::line of rationalization forming::

so if I use an electric grinder, Ill kill it, and have to buy two

total cost - 150 bucks

if however, I buy a compressor at harbor freight (100)

and air grinder (40)

I save ten bucks, AND glom a free compressor in the deal!!!

WOO HOOOOO!

hey, compressed air to keep it clean, it RUNS on compressed air, its gotta stay clean!

I agree that air tools are better than electric, but I doubt that a $100 compressor will have the gonads to run a grinder. Most air tools are cfm hogs...

I agree, he would have to spend at least $500 on a compressor that can hang. I spent the big loot a number of years ago on a big arse Craftman compressor but in the end I still used the Ryobi angle grinder I had bought from a pawn shop. I didn't feel like going out and buying an air grinder. One of these days though.....All I have for air tools is impact, 3/8 ratchet and a paint gun.

I use these grinders all the time in my masonry business.
I've had Skil, Bosch, Makita, and now a Metabo.
Killed two Bosch's in one week, killed the Makita in about 6 months, the Skil never has quit and the Metabo is like the energizer bunny.

if any one is interested in air tools they should check Costco. They carry a kit with a bunch of different tools in it for about $100.00. Costco usually carries items that are at least decent.

I used my air grinder worked pretty good except for where the Glass was thick. Then used my sears industrial. Did not know about blowing it out though will have to do that when I use it next.

Thanks for the tip. :cool:

Thanks guys. I have a nice compressor, (12cfm - 8hp, 26gal tank.) and an air sander and an air cut-off grinder that work just fine with it. I have found however that the electric grinder seems to have more "oomph" when the going gets thick..

-Roger

CCrew,

You've got enough compressor there-no doubt.

I completely agree with you on the power issue when grinding. I like the electrics because...

They're not so dang noisy.

The cords are lighter nad easier to manuever than an air hose.

I use a Sears grinder. These were used commercially yrs back in the glass trade and the only other grinders that compared were Millers Falls brand. I use one on my home projects now and it won't die. It has gone though at least 20 big boat (30'-40') projects and only needed one switch replacement. I push as hard as I can stay with on 24 or 36 grit to take surfaces down and it keeps going. I tried one of the lighter, smaller and cheaper off brands but it died quickly. My cheap harborfreight type compressor and grinder won't keep up with it.

well -

I DO have a sears electric grinder, but its a huge beast of a thing, not at all manuverable

then again, you could bolt a wheel to the spindle and drive a car with it, put a cutoff wheel on the thing and it will eat thru 1/2inch plate like a hot knife thru butter

how bout the beast sized harbor freight compressor? the one thats 169? five horse, I think 8 cfm (???) way better numbers than the el cheapo, huge thing, must be six feet tall, not sure of the gallonage

edit - memory isnt quite as good, but I was looking back in the summer, lol, im losing my mind AND my memory this semester!

* Long-life oil lubricated compressor with precision machined cast iron sleeve
* Twin capacitor motor with thermal overload protection
* Wheel kit with 6'' wheels and ergonomic for smooth portability
* Oil level indicator window for easy maintenance
* Reduced vibration with rubber foot stabilizers
* 4-1/2 peak horsepower; 120 volt, 60Hz
* 125 PSI max; 4.4 CFM @ 90 PSI; 11.1 CFM @ 40 PSI
* Shipping weight: 152 lbs.

21 gallons of air should let it run a while tho, lol

air recip saw for 20 bucks, not bad, looks handy

(something is wrong with my elbow, I cant one hand the sawzall any more! dammned old age!)

We use Milwakee ..I must admit not on fiberglass but my friend at work is the welder he uses it day in and day out three years going strong..
Ok now air tools .. I love the way air tools work they are light ,, run cool and have smooth power. But I hate hearing a 5 HP compressor running for hours on end when my 1/3 HP sander will do the same work ! We have really expensive electricity here.. I even use my 12 volt portible to fill tires when I have the time. I worked at a body shop for 5 years and do my own painting and I truly love air tools but they are so inefficent ! Can you imagine a 5 HP finishing sander !!

My .02 cents worth.

Milwaulkee is the very best, period. All the other makes are off-shore (China) products. The Milwaukee is made in the US and the motors are made in Germany..,first class all the way. I have worked in industrial maintainance and engineering for over 38 years and I think some of these tools will outlive me.
