i have a merc 150 efi... it throws a double rooster tail about 25 feet hi and about 40 feet back. it does this even when it is trimmed down. i can reach roughly 50 mph on my 18 foot bass boat. i was wondering what i need to do to get it to quit throwing this annoying rooster tail...am i losing power/speed? any suggestions???

the rooster tail happens when the motor is either trimmed out too far or it is mounted too high on the transom - look at the cav plate it should be even with the bottom of the boat -you can mount higher like an inch or two but thats dependant on the whole setup - maybe you need a longshaft motor or you could try an adjustable jack plate .. race boats make rooster tails but they are also setup to ensure proper water pressure so as not to kill the motor ...

Are you sure the rooster tails aren't coming from transducers, or whatever.

Unless you're hauling a couple of 350 lb fishermen and yer fishie's swimmin' pools are full, you should be able to do better than that.

With a 150 XR4 on an 88 Tracker, not particularly noted for performance, I see low 60's with a long low rooster tail. It's trimmed out about 60%, and high enough so at that trim it's just about to lose water pressure. I figure about 3/4 of the prop is in the water.

Setup has a lot to do with performance and handling. The experts on the web are at screamandfly.com

hope it helps
