I am new to this forum but have learned alot just from looking at some of the posts. I have a 89 xr-4 that i have been trying to get to idle under 1000 rpms. It runs fine at wot. I adjusted the timing and linkages the way my clymer manual told me but had one question. It said to adjust the initial timing to 22 atdc with idle link all way down position cranking but does not give me a number for running at idle. All other years say 3-11 atdc but when i put it at 6 atdc the overheat buzzer goes off when i keep throttle at about 3000 rpms for a while. If i raise timing to where book says it does not idle but does not overheat. Checked and am getting spark on all cylinders and compression is between 128-133 psi and motor has been recently rebuilt. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: xr-4 idles very rough

I guess does anyone have a 89 xr-4 that knows if there is a trick to tuning or is it just finicky. I have contacted cc to ask about reeds because it has the reeds that came in 89 still on it. Maybe the reeds would help alot because the motor seems like it coughs and runs very rich in idle. I understand that it's hard to troubleshoot something like this without looking at it. Motor runs great everywhere but idle, maybe the old xr motors just idle bad? Would appreciate any help.
