Re: Wrong starter? Engine turns over SLOW

Yeah, that is what it is probably going to boil down to. Supposed to be in low 40's on Sunday here. I think I may start dismantling this weekend. I will probably have to yank the manifolds and heads while it is in the boat. I don't know how I am going to get the motor out, the boat is up high and I don't think I can get anything back there ( see picture, I think it is attached..) Any suggestions?

No trailer, I had it delivered from a dealer, he had this monster hydraulic trailer, we had to put it up that high because my driveway is on an incline, and when he backed it in the rear of the trailer came up higher and that was as low as we can have the boat and still get the trailer out from underneath..

You need 8-10 feet from the deck of the floor to the cross member that you hook the come along to.

Thats why i said it's way high. Nows the best time to get a trailer cheap.

Once you get it out of the boat how you gonna move the boat out from under the motor?

YEAH, That is what I was thinking, maybe build something inside the boat, then have a beam come out to the shed, then I can lower from there... Either way I guess the engine really should come out.

I never talk about a guys wife Hah.

Yea you can lower the backend of the boat and pull the motor with a backhoe.

Actually it's the way i prefer to do it than you can move it into the garage onto a stand/crate or skid.

Hahaha

Boy do I feel dumb, when you said 'hoe' I was thinking of a garden hoe, hahaha.. I do not have a backhoe, my brother in law however does have a nice Kabota which I think would do the trick.. I don't think I can get it over to the side of my house though because my boat is blocking the only real access for something like that to get to the back yard... Looks like I better get to the design table and figure out how to build something...

That looks tough.

Ya know your gonna have to pull the outdrive before the engine comes out. Or was it pulled after the pic. Maybe you should pull the manis, intake and heads and see what you find. If you stripped it down you may find it easier to handle. Whats the block and guts weight? 300-350 lbs? You dont need a back hoe to move that. Couple a neighbor kids could toss it over the side.:D

Like the Cheif said, good time to buy a trailer

Good Luck.

I was thinking something like that rig, but it certainly does seem like a lot of work for sure. Like captmello said, I will probably yank the manifolds and heads and see what the heck is going on in there. Then if/when I pull the motor I will not need such a heavy duty rig... Yeah, going to need a trailer but I have not found the right deal yet! Budget,,, Grrr

Realy i would change the engine ground cable first. whats that 5 dollars. When a starter is new and an engine drags usualy not getting good ground or contact. If you get it to turn over proper, then do a dry and wet compression test. and post the results here. Or you could pull the motor spend a bunch of money put it back in and have the same problem.;)

Ayuh,...
Jumper Cables hooked up redundantly will tell the same story,...
Bad Cables usually speak for themselvs by showing Heat where they're Bad...

But I still think it's time to Yank it...

Re: Wrong starter? Engine turns over SLOW

Yeah, I have actually checked the ground and connections to the starter. It is not the same sound you would hear from low voltage, that starter is working hard. Like I stated early on, in comparison , it sounds as if it is geared wrong. From what I read here it is not possible for that to be the case. I may do another compression test on Sunday before I get wrenching, but again I don't think the motor is cranking over fast enough to get good results. Not to mention we need good oil pressure for the lifters to work properly right?

Why not just pull the starter and have it tested by an auto electric shop. (even if its new) If it checks good then you will know its a cable or the motor itself.

Possibly is time to yank it. Once had this problem, hooked a jumper cable up and had same result. changes motor and still had same result. changed ground cable for the h--l of it. worked like a champ. best I can figure is the jumper cable is to long and too much resistance. Just a thought though!:)

Re: Wrong starter? Engine turns over SLOW

I did a few more tests, compression low across the board and I hear a small clunking in there, this is after dumping some mystery oil in it. Also after more inspection I am finding more and more reasons to pull the engine and get a fresh start. I have the manifolds off and everything disconnected and she is ready to come out, but as we discussed earlier I am going to have to completely disassemble it to get it out due to the height of the boat. I have found another complete motor that is in good shape in the meantime that will be the replacement. Thank you all for the suggestions and replies. Let the fun begin!!!

Re: Wrong starter? Engine turns over SLOW

Hello all. Long overdue update.. I have the engine ripped down to the block and am building a rig to hoist it out of the boat, I just wanted to make it as light as possible.. Meanwhile I scored a used engine ( to rebuild, but is nice and complete and rust free! ) I just finished honing the cylinders on that and getting ready for reassembly. I will post pictures next week when I pull the old motor, that has been one of the biggest obstacles of this because, as stated earlier in this post, the boat is high off the ground and I cannot get any machinery back there and it is not on a trailer. Stay tuned!!!!!!!
