Pay 43.00 a year for unlimited fresh water towing? I just got insurance on my boat, through Boat US. My wife thinks I'm crazy for buying the unlimited towing for 43.00. They offer 250 each time up to 500 for the year for free, but I know my luck and opted for the extra. It'll pay 100% of the charges as many times a year as I need it. Think it was a good idea to get it?

To me, it depends on where you will be boating. If I was just going to be on inland lakes and rivers, I would probably pass. Chances are if you need it there your included tow will cover it. Many times you can get a nearby boater or friend to pull you in for free. If I boated offshore or on the great lakes it might make more sense.

People that think they're fine on inland lakes and rivers have never been stranded. I got stranded on a friggin' jet ski once and had to paddle back 3 miles. I would have paid $43 for a ride back in a second. I have the TowBoat US gold membership (free towing to my home port form ANY WHERE!) and although the only time I have needed it, it was for a soft grounding. I pay $185 a year and the tow boat operator said if I didn't have the coverage, it would have cost $350!!
$43 a year is cheap. I'd get it in a minute.

I pay $169 for SeaTow Gold . . . So $43 is cheap. A $250/500 limit is not so good. One incident and you are probably in the hole.

Re: Would you...

depends if there are any tow services on the lake where you go. be sure you understand the limitations.

every policy is different, but mine pays $500 toward a tow for no extra charge. that's good enough for me.

this question gets asked a lot. Everyone's circumstances are different, as are their towing policies, conditions and benefits. So much depends on whether you are likely to get help from other boaters, and that is a function of the size of boat, distance from "home" and whether you boat on the coast with helpful boaters, or elsewhere with people who own boats who won't help.

One thing is for sure: if you pay $150/year, your tow is not "free." You have made installment payments. If you already have $500 coverage, you have to factor that in as the first installment. People will post, "my tow would have been $800 if I didn't have free towing" that they paid $150/year for four years ($600) on top of the $500 that was already covered--sop they lost $300.

if you get towed more than once a year, or once every couple years, you need to look at your boating, not your coverage.

You do not have to be a member to use a towing service; you just pay all at once instead of in annual installments.

Would you....Pay 43.00 a year for unlimited fresh water towing?

Yes. And I do. We boat on Green Bay (Lake Michigan). It's peace of mind for us, given the huge area of water. On smaller lakes you can usually wave someone down or use a cell phone. Out there you might not see another boat all day, and you are usually out of cell reception once you are a few miles out. But we can use the VHF to call Tow BoatUS.

My Insurance through Progressive also offers towing, but like your insurance, it is limited. $250 or something like that. If I need a tow from 10 miles off shore, I'll be giving up a lot of money right then and there. Again, the unlimited is good peace of mind, even if I never use it.

I have boat US insurance with the $250 per event- $500 per year. I happily pay $150 additional for Tow Boat US. Only had to call them once in 40 years and would have had a huge bill without the unlimited. My grandsons were on board that day - I would have paid any amount!

Re: Would you...

The obvious question, make sure they cover where you boat... Where I'm at, there simply are NO commercial services whatsoever... If you have a breakdown, you either paddle, flag someone down, or call someone you know.

Thanks for all the replies! I guess you can call me an over insurer. I've seen some crazy things and want to be extra covered.
