I have a 35 hp evenrude, 57 model. I just recently got it running. It runs fune in neutral, revs just fine, but when I put it in gear, it won't take off. It seams as if the load on the prop is bogging things down.
Does this sound like a wrong prop, or could it be something else.
Thanks for any help !
Chuck

Re: WOT, No power in gear

Howdy, Chuck. Sounds to me like you have a power loss. This is most likely to be a fuel starvation problem or you are running on one cylinder. It can sound great and rev freely with no load on one cylinder, but it will fall on its face when you put a load on it.

Fire her up and (carefully) pull or disable one spark plug at a time. If it dies or drops rpm that cylinder is making power, If there is no change that cylinder is dead.

If she passes that test, pump your primer bulb when she tries to bog down. If she picks right up you have a fuel pump or carb problem.

Let us know the results and we can move on from there.

Red sky at night. . .
JB

Re: WOT, No power in gear

Thanks J. B.
You were right on the money. The top cylinder has no fire. I have gone and bought new plugs points and condensers, and today I will try and figure if the coil for that cylinder is bad. I have another complete motor, identical to this one so parts should be no problem. Any advice you might have for me in undertaking this task would be welcome.
Thanks again, neighbor
Chuck

Re: WOT, No power in gear

I just wanted to say thanks for all the good advice I have recieved here on this message board. When I started the project of rebuilding this Old boat I had no idea what I was doing. Thanks to this forum and the manual, it went pretty good.
I have fire on both cylinders now ( it was the coil J. B.) and are hopinng to get to the river today and try things out.
Thanks again for everthing and I'm sure that ,seeing as how this thing is 44 years old, I'll be back with more questions and more problems to solve
thanks , Chuck
