Working on an old FB boat... first time!!!

I've just bought an older fibreglass boat. The former owner had started patching the rather rough fibreglass but had not sanded it down. Just wondering what type of sander I should use and, also, as there is a bit of fibreglass work still to be done on the boat (and I have ZERO experience in the matter), are there some books you could recommend on doing fibreglass boat repairs.

Also, transom seems not as solid as it should. Any way to tell for sure if it's ok and is this a job that can be done "at home" or should I get it done at the boat shop??

Thanks.

Welcome to iBoats. We could help you better if you could describe the boat and its condition. Post pictures if at all possible. We love pictures.

arrrrg matey....welcome aboard....

this is boat university......and youve got some studyin to do.

there is NOTHING on a fiberglass boat that cannot be fixed.....

currently there is around 10 transom jobs being done, 8 stringer replacements, and a multitude of misc jobs....

including some really interesting ones....... darren is refitting a show replica of batmans bat boat. drewmitch is converting his boat from a closed bow to an open bow. QC is restoring an old woodie to perfection, and ataraxia is taking an outboard boat and converting it to a inboard, using a very hight horsepower vw motor that has never been used on a boat before.

the people here really know their stuff, and are happy to gide you thru it, if you choose to do it your self.

search transom replacement.
depending on the boat, it will cost over two thousand to have the transom replaced professionally....you can do it yourself for under $500.

cheers
