Hi All,

Having sorted out another ignition problem (CD2USL) I now have a problem with the woodruff key snapping on the flywheel / crank, both have snapped in the same area and are the same size, im going to get 2 more from my local Evinrude stockists.

Question, is it the flywheel which has been beaten around prior to me owning the engine, i have a spare flywheel from an earlier model ( 85/86 ) which is 1 tooth smaller but can i fit this too my engine ??? with the corrisponding starter gear which is 1 tooth larger, the internal diameter is the same and having tried it for a fitting it also fits the crank etc.

Or is it a torquing down problem ??? i understand that the flywheel should be torqued down to 100ft lbs and was sure that it was this tim, any advice regarding the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Woodruff Key / flywheel Problems

Flywheel MUST be torqued to the correct value or you will keep shearing keys. You get a few tries to get it right before you destroy the flywheel and C/S. Each failed time, the damage gets worse. Bore and taper must be clean and dry (no oil or other substances).

after a key shear the flywheel and crank tapers MUST be lapped back together or its simply gonna shear another.
also a lean sneeze can shear a key.
all the key does is index the flywheel, the taper holds it.

Re: Woodruff Key / flywheel Problems

Cheers folks,

I have decided to scrap the existing flywheel as this has been abused prior me owning it, the replacement has no signs of wear or tear, the crank has picked up a little fragment of the key, but this shouldn,t be to difficult to remove with some grinding paste with the new fly wheel or emmery cloth giving it a light rub.

Many thanks guys
