we have a mariner 30hp (2 cyl.). It recently started dying out while running. 1st time it happened thought it was lines or bulb, because bulb wouldn't harden when pumped. have changed those and still dying out. once motor is running it would start to sputter and die out but if i pushed primer button it would act like it wanted to run. any ideas on what this may be?

Re: wont stay running

Just read your question on your outboard motor dying. I'm not real fimilar with these motors but I thought I would pass along something that my friend had on an old small outboard. We had the same thing, underway and on good throttle his motor would start to sputter and then die. We at that time would pump the prime bulb and the power would come back. If I remember right it came back and ran strong until we stopped pumping and then after a minute it would start to die again. In my brilliance at the time,we rigged a inline electric pump and ran it off the trolling motor battery,to our surprise ,it ran the same, sputtering, dieing, ect. I had no Idea so he took it a boat shop and they fixed it. What they found was a bad ignition coil which was under the flywheel,Their explanation was that when we richened the fuel mixture that lowered the kv output requirement and allowed it to fire the plugs and when it was a normal fuel ratio the plugs required higher kv=spark= and was faulturing under the bad, weak igntion coil. I think my friend said that his coil had a small burn hole in the side of it,which may have been arching out under a load. Just my experience and it maybe common or it may be very rare. I wanted to at least pass it on to you. Good luck.
