Won't start - simple question?

I have a 1982 Larsen boat with a Mercruiser 488 (inline 4). The engine cranks and starts but won't stay running (it has been sitting up for the last several months). Here is what I've done so far:

1. Verified fuel pump is operative. Also, cleaned fuel filter
2. Replaced most electrical ignition components (coil, condensor, distibutor cap, rotor)
3. Replaced spark plugs, and wires).
4. Replaced fuel and put in fuel preservative in gas tank.

I did get the engine running, however discovered that the ignition switch was stuck. So my guess is the bendix from the starter had engaged the fly wheel keeping the crankshaft turning, hence the appearance of the engine running. Could this be something in the ignition system, electrical or perhaps the carb or even a timing issue? Let me know if you can offer some advice.

Regards - John

So it runs or doesn't run?.....
From what you are describing you have a faulty solenoid......
Canyou be a little more precise with your problem?

Your post is a little unclear wether the engine is actally running or not, but I thought of one thing you could do. Eliminate the ign. switch by disconnecting the start wire from it and try starting the engine by jumping the starter with a screwdriver. If the gear stays engaged when you take the screwdriver off, then it's the soleniod and not the switch.

If it's not staying engaged and the motor is actually running, you could have gunk in the float area of the carb, either not letting the float drop or resticting fuel flow into/out of the float chamber. When was the last time the carb's been apart?
