I hope someone can help me, I have a 50hp merc I believe it is an 85 model not sure though. The plate says serial # A 101153, I have not been able to find out for sure maybe someone can asist on this also. I just bought it motor turns over great but does not appear to have spark. I have done the following so far pulled 1 & 3 plug no spark seems to have plenty compression all plugs are new NGK's, checked gas and primer system all seems ok. Brand new switch box installed prior to me wasn't the problem. The key ignition seems to be ok, I disconnected all black & yellow wires coming from ignition 1 at a time thiinking a grounded switch nothing. Everthing seems to be doing what it should be doing choke solenoid, starter, battery, I'm thinking it may be ignition trigger but I don't even know what that does. I thought about it being a stator but I'm under the impression thats to keep battery charged? Any ideas I could try I have no idea of the model # only that it is a 50 hp Mercury. I would appreciate any help and suggestions I do plan on buying a shop manual for it once identified model #.

A trigger is 2 separate windings each effecting 2 cyl. so the chances are you have a bad stator if you have no spark at all. do you have a OHM meter or better yet a DVA if so we can give you simple test procedures

Hello thanks for the reply, yes I do have a volt meter not digital though also has ohms. Can you offer a simple way to test the stator. Thanks Steve

Without a DVA your voltmeter won't read right but here the specs from CDI

Ok I have checked the wires coming from stator Red to red/white = about 125ohms
blue to blue/white nothing what would this mean? I removed yellows from rectifier still no spark at all.
what would not having any continuity mean at from Red to red/white on switch box

Your low speed winding in the stator is open (shot)

Re: Won't start merc 50hp

when the key switch is on red to red/white 125 1800 RX1k
key off blue to blue/white = 1800 on RX1k ?
would the stator still be shot. Also I have tried to look up the serial # A 101153 and come up with nothing at all for year. Any ideas, all as I know at this point has 4 cylinders and appears to be 2 stroke motor engine casing says reedvalves and gas appears to be mixed. I am new to boating and basically not know much any help would be appreciated thanx
